Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Wolleon (Bay Head/Pt. Pleasant Beach) was named the MAC Player of the Week. Rider saw its three-game winning streak end Saturday with a loss to Northeastern. The Huskies out-shot Rider 33-6. For the Broncs, Erin Wolleon made a Rider-record 20 saves. Sophomore Sarah Artale (Jackson/Jackson) scored two goals, the second coming in the 116th minute of play, to lead Rider to an overtime victory over Elon. The victory was the third in a row for the Broncs and the second consecutive overtime contest for Rider. Rider has never won four games in a row, and the only other time the Broncs won three straight was the last three games of the 1997 season. Artale scored an unassisted goal 17:04 into the game to give Rider a 1-0 lead. Elon (0-3) answered back with a goal just 1:29 into the second half. In the second overtime, Artale took a crossing pass from freshman Leah Craig (Sayreville/War Memorial). The Elon goalie, Kara Zagol, collided with her defender just as Artale was gathering the pass, and Artale scored from 25 yards out into an open net. Elon out-shot Rider 26-24. Erin Wolleon made 12 saves.

For the first time in its five years as a varsity program, the Rider women's soccer team is 2-0, defeating Drexel in overtime. Sophomore Colleen Evans (Bay Head/St. Rose) scored 13 minutes into overtime to lead Rider to victory. Trailing 1-0, Rider tied the score with 20 minutes left in regulation on a goal by senior Tracy Albrecht (Rockville Center, NY/South Side). Drexel took a 1-0 lead with just 2:30 left in the first half on a header. Rider out-shot Drexel 16-14. Erin Wolleon made 10 saves in the Rider net. For Evans, it was her second goal in as many games this season after scoring two goals all of last season. The Broncs won a season opener for the first time ever, defeating Monmouth. Sophomore Andrea Giuliani (West Deptford/West Deptford) scored just 4:09 into the game, and Sarah Artale made it 2-0 eight minutes into the second half. Colleen Evans scored just four minutes later for a 3-0 lead. Monmouth out-shot Rider 20-16, including 15-6 in the second half. Erin Wolleon made 11 saves.

M. Soccer

The Broncs came back to tie Temple Sunday. Rider (0-2-2) senior Todd Armstrong (Spotsylvania, VA/Courtland) scored with less than 20 minutes left in the second half to tie the score at 2-2. Trailing 1-0, Rider tied the score mid-way through the first half on a goal by senior Bob Francis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock). Temple's Jon Wean scored his second goal of the game with 8:30 left in the first half to give the Owls a 2-1 lead at intermission. Wean scored just one minute into the game for a 1-0 Temple lead. Temple out-shot Rider 22-16. Rider sophomore goalkeeper Brian Gill (Smithtown, NY/St. Anthony's) made four saves. Rider junior Ryan Gallagher (Hanover, PA/South Western) scored with 15 minutes left in the second half to tie the score, giving the Broncs a tie at Stony Brook Wednesday. Stony Brook (1-0-1) scored 24 minutes into the game on an "own goal" off of Rider defender Jason Brockman. Trainor took a pass from senior Scott Fanning (Creamridge/Notre Dame) and scored form the left side to send the game into overtime. Brian Gill made six saves, two in overtime. Both teams were credited with 12 shots. Rider led St. Joseph's 1-0 on a first-half goal by senior Bob Francis (Richboro, PA/Council Rock) before St. Joseph's scored twice in a span of 19 seconds to take a 2-1 lead with 33 minutes left to play. Rider out-shot St. Joseph's 12-11. Brian Gill (made two saves. Philadelphia U. out-shot Rider 18-15, including 3-1 in overtime. Rider sophomore goalkeeper Brian Gill made 5 saves.

Volleyball

Rider won twice on Saturday to win its own Rider Classic volleyball tournament, and now owns a winning record (4-3) for the first time since finishing the 1995 season 16-13. The All-Tournament team consisted of Evette Hoeffner and Jaclyn Levi of Rider. Rider defeated Drexel for the first time since 1985, 30-20, 20-23, 30-27, led by freshman Jaclyn Levi (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan), senior Evette Hoeffner (Fairlawn/Fairlawn) and sophomore Amy Householder (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk). Levi compiled 12 kills and 18 digs, Hoeffner had 11 kills and 20 digs, and Householder had 10 kills. Sophomore Laura Berger (Valhalla, NY/Lady of Good Counsel) added 25 assists, four blocks and a pair of service aces. The Broncs came back to defeat Wagner 30-13, 30-25, 30-22, led by Levi, who compiled 15 kills and 13 digs. Hoeffner added 11 kills and 19 digs, and Householder added 11 kills and 14 digs. Berger contributed 29 assists and four blocks for the Broncs. Rider went 1-1 during the first day of the Rider Classic volleyball tournament. Rider defeated St. Francis 30-19, 30-26, 25-30, 30-24. The Broncs were led by Jaclyn Levi, who compiled 13 kills and 23 digs. Evette Hoeffner added 11 kills and 29 digs. Laura Berger added 21 assists and three service aces. Rider lost to Sacred Heart 30-27, 30-21, 30-28. Against Sacred Heart, Rider was led by Amy Householder, who compiled 14 kills and 13 digs. Evette Hoeffner compiled 32 digs, while Laura Berger added 21 assists.

Last season the Rider volleyball team did not record a win until the ninth match of the season. This year, it took Rider just two matches to record a victory, defeating Delaware State at the US Airways Classic. The Broncs were led by Evette Hoeffner, who was named to the All-Tournament team. Hoeffner led the entire nation in digs last season, and was named to the all-tournament team in four of the five tournaments Rider played last year. The Broncs began the season with a loss to the host team, with the Colonials defeating Rider 30-17, 24-30, 33-31, 30-14. Against Robert Morris, Hoeffner compiled 10 kills and 28 digs. Against Delaware State, Rider won 30-19, 30-16 and 30-18, led by freshmen Melissa Kons (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) and Jaclyn Levi, who combined for 21 kills and 13 digs. Laura Berger added 23 assists and seven digs. In the match with Oakland, Rider lost 30-28, 30-18 and 30-26. Hoeffner (32 digs, 11 kills) and Kons (13 kills) led Rider.

Field Hockey

The Broncs began defense of their Northeast Conference title by defeating UMBC Sunday in the first NEC game of the season.

Rookie Christina Ang (Somers Point/Mainland Regional) scored her first two collegiate goals to lead Rider (1-1, 1-0 NEC), while freshman Molly Boulden (Brooklawn/Gloucester) added a goal and two assists. Ang tipped in a shot by Boulden just 3:20 into the game for the only goal Rider would need. Boulden later took a pass from senior Alison Waters (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) and scored her first collegiate goal for a 2-0 Rider lead. Ang scored her second goal of the game to give Rider a 3-0 lead at the half. In the second half, Boulden found junior Krissy Merrill (Manheim Twp./Ocala, Florida) with a pass and Merrill scored for the final score. Rider out-shot UMBC 33-2. Rider sophomore Jen Cushinotto made two saves for the shutout. Rider lost the season opener to West Chester, who scored 25 minutes into the game on an unassisted goal. Rider and West Chester each compiled seven shots. Jen Cushinotto made four saves.

Cross Country

The Rider cross country season began Saturday at the Fordham Invitational, with the men placing 10th, and the women finishing 11th in the 17-team field. The men were led by senior David Dejong (Medford/Shawnee), who placed 20th among the 177 runners, covering the five-mile Van Cortland Park course in 27:02.0. The women were led by senior Uli Bromme (Tenafly/Tenafly), who placed first for the Broncs, 39th overall among the 154 runners, covering the 5,000-meter course in 20:19.3. Sophomore Kate Henninger (Whiting/Manchester Twp.) placed second for Rider, 48th overall (20:32.1). Senior Adrienne Alexander (Franklinville/Sacred Heart) was 113th (23:37.0), senior Melissa Cardwell (Sea Isle City/Ocean City) was 120th (24:00.0). Senior Karen Johanson (Jackson/Jackson) was 132nd (24:38.2), and sophomore Laura Henry (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) was 142nd (26:23.7). Senior Helder Santo (Clark/A.L. Johnson) finished second for Rider, 88th overall, in 28:31.7. Sophomore Robert Broomhead (Absecon/Absegami) was 99th in 28:43.9, senior Kevin Chapman (Long Valley, NY/W. Morris Central) was 126th (30:29.1), and senior Mike Fulton (Maple Shade/Maple Shade) was 156th (32:58.1). Junior Rob Croskey (Glenside, PA/Bishop McDevitt) placed 171st (36:27.3). In the men's frosh race, Rider freshman Matt Catinella (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) placed fourth (29:29.8), freshman Brian Styler (Cranford/Cranford) was sixth, freshman Jeff Zola (Deptford/Deptford) was seventh (30:30.2), freshman Joe Shinn (Riverside/Riverside) was 12th. In the women's frosh race, freshman Megan O'Halloran (Pennsauken/Pennsauken) was fourth overall (21:31.4), freshman Sarah Peterson (Belle Meade/Montgomery) was seventh (21:49.3), freshman Liz Buatti (Rocky Hill, CT/Coginchaug) was 17th (25:33.6) and freshman Erica DellaBonta (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) was 20th (26:37.0).

Golf

The Broncs placed seventh of 18 teams at the Cornell-Colgate Invitational this weekend. After shooting a 317 on Saturday at Cornell, the Broncs came back to shoot a 316 on Sunday at Colgate. Sophomore Bob Whartenby (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) shot a 78 on Sunday to finish with a two-day total of 152, good for eighth place. Freshman Sean Sexton (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) shot a 75 on Sunday to finish with a 153, good for 10th place. Senior Jason Gold (Mt. Holly/Holy Cross) shot a 79 on Sunday to finish with a 160, and freshman Jarred Brechman (Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raritan) shot an 84 on Sunday to finish with a 168.
