Faculty Lecture Series Upcoming Lecture: "Russian Travelers to the Holy Land in the Nineteenth Century"

Upcoming Lecture: Russian Travelers to the Holy Land in the Nineteenth Century
Thursday, March 13, 2008
5 - 6 p.m. in Sweigart 110
Lecuturer: Dr. Lucien Frary, Department of History

In the nineteenth century, tens of thousands of Russians made pilgrimages to the Middle East, known as the Orthodox East (Pravoslavnyi Vostok). Archimandrate Antonin Kapustin, among the most influential of tsarist officials in the Holy Land, helped establish connections that facilitated Russian contacts in a significant way. This presentation will provide an introduction to the influence over the ages of Middle Eastern Christianity in Russian life. It will also describe Russian interests in the Holy Land and the Arab world in recent times. Whereas Kapustin’s career has been the subject of scholarly commentary, his political-religious activities in Athens and Jerusalem remain unexplored, fascinating subjects for analysis that shed light on Russian Orthodox-Christian interactions in the nineteenth century in a broader sense.

Lucien J. Frary is Assistant Professor of History. His primary research areas are the history and culture of Imperial Russia and the Balkans and Near East in modern times. He has published essays in Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History, Mediterranean Historical Review, Modern Greek Studies Yearbook, and Ohio Slavic Papers. He also serves as the Treasurer of the Association for the Study of Eastern Christian History and Culture (AESC).

The Faculty Lecture Series of the College of Liberal Arts, Education, and Sciences is a program of faculty lectures and performances with accompanying discussion during the academic year on the third Monday of each month. The Series provides a forum for faculty to share high quality research primarily with other faculty. The content of each presentation depends on the faculty member’s current research or artistic interests. The faculty member also considers the diversity of the audience members in his or her presentation. Each presentation is forty-five minutes, followed by a question and answer period, and a wine and cheese reception.

The Faculty Lecture Series is supported by the Offices of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs; the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Education, and Sciences; and the Assistant Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Education, and Sciences.
