New Graduate Padalino is the N.J. Student Entrepreneur of the Year Like most entrepreneurs, Vincent Padalino was drawn by the lure of earning money. Selling graphics T-shirts out of the trunk of his car, Padalino, then a student at Lawrence High School, was creating shirts one at a time to fill specific orders. Still, it was as much a way to meet people as it was a revenue generator.
“After a while, though, I started making some decent money and it got serious,” said Padalino, who earned his bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurial Studies at Rider’s Commencement 2009 ceremonies on May 15.
McNair Scholar Heads to Harvard, New England Conservatory When Michael Gorostiza, a December ’08 graduate, hands out his business card, the recipient might be surprised by his title – or titles, for that matter: Michael David Gorostiza – Biologist, Composer. While they are two distinct disciplines, Gorostiza will have a chance to study both his passions in the fall, when he pursues an M.A. in Environmental Policy at Harvard University and studies Music Theory at the New England Conservatory. He plans to divide his time studying at the conservatory during the day and taking classes at Harvard by night.
ISCAP, URSA Highlights Student Research, Scholarship The Independent Scholarship and Creative Activity Presentations showcased the outstanding academic and creative work of more than 30 Rider University students on May 6. The day featured presentations, a poster session and the annual Undergraduate Research Scholars Awards.
Commencement Traffic Advisory Commencement will be held on the Lawrenceville campus on Thursday evening, May 14, for all graduate and CCS students. The undergraduate Commencement ceremony will be held on Friday morning, May 15. With a large number of visitors and vehicle traffic anticipated on both days, the following traffic guidelines will be implemented.
Rider Senior Will Show Documentary at Famed French Film Festival Patty Wittenburg had only produced one previous documentary when she was approached with an idea for another. Wittenburg’s first effort, Life in Production, earned praise from her professor, Shawn Kildea, who then suggested the possibility of an independent study project to the then-junior Radio and Television Communications major. The task: chronicling the life and work of photojournalist Graeme Phelps “Flip” Schulke, whose images brought the Civil Rights movement into millions of homes far removed from the front lines.
Students Assist DHSS in Prenatal Care Research Currently, New Jersey’s Department of Health and Senior Services runs three prenatal care programs for residents in Trenton, Newark and New Brunswick as part of a pilot program. If successful, women could see more clinics popping up across the state. Of course, plenty of research is needed to determine the effectiveness and need for a program before deciding to expand. Recently, students from Rider University’s College of Business Administration investigated the effects of prenatal care to assist the Department of Health and Senior Services.
Scholarship Luncheon Connects Friends Every one of the hundreds of members of the Rider community who donates to the University scholarship fund certainly has his or her own motivation for doing so. And while their reasons for philanthropy vary with each individual, the dividend is always the same – their gift provides a Rider student with an opportunity to succeed, making each gift more personal than monetary. On April 30, the beneficiaries of this generosity were given another opportunity – to meet and thank the very people who provide the funds for their scholarships.
Rider’s Model UN Team Named Outstanding Delegation Rider’s Model United Nations Team received two top honors at the conclusion of the National Model United Nations Conference, held from Sunday, April 5, through Thursday, April 9, inside the U.N. headquarters in New York City. Representing Lebanon, the Rider team received the prestigious Outstanding Delegation award, which is the highest distinction a team can receive. The Rider entry competed against 300 delegations from national and international universities.
Chojnacki Named Student Ambassador by Embassy of Spain “Think big!” That’s the advice Dr. Linda Materna, director of the Center for International Education, gave Heather Chojnacki ’11 who hopes to pursue a career in diplomatic relations. So far, the sophomore Spanish and Global and Multinational Studies dual major is following Materna’s advice. As a freshman, Chojnacki traveled to London with Rider’s Baccalaureate Honors Program. Last fall, she studied at Rider’s exchange partner university, Nebrija University, in Madrid. She plans to study abroad in Argentina in Fall 2010. Recently, she was named Spanish Student Ambassador by the Trade Commission of the Embassy of Spain for the upcoming academic year.
Graduating Seniors Praised for Academic, Extracurricular Success Three graduating seniors were honored for their exemplary record of academic performance, extracurricular achievement and service to the University during the Rider University Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 2, in the BLC Cavalla Room. The President’s Awards were among the 68 honors presented at the annual awards ceremony.
American Society for Microbiology Recognizes Student Researchers Inside the laboratories of the second floor of Science and Technology Building, two students are conducting research, the sort that could someday affect how cancer is treated and how the United States handles bioterrorism scares. For the past two years, Daniel Graham, a junior Biology major, has been studying the effects of chemotherapy drugs on the gut. Megan Kozlowski, a junior Biology major, is conducting research to see if a particular drug could help slow down a hyper-immune system. Both students received American Society for Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowships and plan to continue their research this summer.
Dining Etiquette Tutorial Gives Students Plenty to Digest Landing a job requires much more than good grades. The skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom will ultimately fuel your professional course, but the right handshake and a proper regard for table manners can separate you from the pack just as easily. Rider students gained valuable insight into these often-untaught skills from Michele Pollard Patrick, a certified protocol officer and business etiquette consultant.

Christopher Shepherd and Jonilda Agushi, two of Rider’s student Eco-Reps, and Melissa Greenberg, Rider’s sustainability coordination manager, showed support at the Central New Jersey Environmental D.C. Day, hosted by Rep. Rush Holt of New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District.
Katalayi Raises Awareness About Congo In 1988, at the age of 6, Arthur-Kalala Katalayi went to visit his grandparents at their homes in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Lubumbashi, in the Katanga Province. Less than 10 years after Katalayi visited his family, the Congo had witnessed two civil wars, in which more than 5.4 million people have died. In an effort to raise awareness of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Katalayi held "Congo Day: Giving Back to Africa Fundraiser" on April 23 in the BLC Theater.

Swimmer Ericka Kriedel Earns Fulbright Scholarship When Ericka Kriedel graduates from Rider in May, she won’t be headed to her home in Wethersfield, Conn., but rather, to the unfamiliar environs of Southeast Asia. The captain of the Broncs’ swimming & diving team – the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions – Kriedel has obtained a Teaching Fulbright Scholarship to study in Thailand.

Celebrating Rider Tradition, Fischler Creates New One After eight years of cheerleading competitions, Heather Fischler decided as a high school student to try her hand at another sport – acrobatics, which combined her love for cheerleading and dance. While she no longer cheers, Fischler still exhibits pride and passion in everything she does. In fact, she is one of Rider’s biggest cheerleaders, which is why she will bring the American Cancer Society Relay for Life to the Lawrenceville campus on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29.
HerStory, Feminist Literary Journal Set to Debut March 25 The premiere of the first edition of HerStory, a new feminist literary journal created by Rider students, will be held on Wednesday, March 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Bart Luedeke Center Fireside Lounge. Through a mixture of fiction, nonfiction, visual art, photography, interviews, plays, poetry and prose, the journal aims to present contemporary feminist issues, while inspiring and uniting female students.

Small Business Consultants Conceive Winning Ways For years, Rider’s College of Business Administration has encouraged its students to learn, experience and lead. Spring Semester Shuttle Schedule is Now Available The campus shuttle program will operate Monday-Thursday and Saturdays. The weekday shuttle will connect the Lawrenceville and Princeton campuses and allow students to take advantage of academic and co-curricular opportunities on both campuses. The Saturday shuttle will link Rider students to the Mercer County region.
