Be Heard In HerStory — Submit Original Work for New Journal

HerStory, a new feminist literary journal created by Rider students, will make its debut this March on the Lawrenceville campus. By offering a mixture of fiction, nonfiction, visual art, photography, interviews, plays, poetry and prose, the journal aims to present contemporary feminist issues, while inspiring and uniting female students.

One of the creators, Maria Gullo, a junior English and Psychology dual major, said she and her friends decided to create the journal so that female students had an outlet to express their thoughts.

Gullo said she was inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s story. The actor never felt she could express who she was because the media never printed her thoughts on events, politics and social justice, explained Gullo.

“I know that many women also feel that they are not heard, that they cannot be who they truly are,” Gullo, the journal’s president and editor in chief, said. “HerStory is a force that will give women an opportunity to express themselves, and get their voices heard.  As a result they will see they are not alone in what they go through.”

The rest of the HerStory staff includes Managerial Editor Julie E. Morcate, a sophomore Secondary Education and English dual major; Public Relations Writer Julie K. Abernathy, a sophomore Elementary Education and Psychology dual major; Art Executive Director Cynthia C. Lascelles, freshman English major; Secretary Marla Savage, a sophomore Elementary Education Arts major; Art Managerial Editor Lacey Colby, junior English major; and Webmaster Kathrine Hedayat, a sophomore English major.

The team is currently working with the Women’s Center to publish the first edition, and plans to publish at least one journal during the fall and spring semester. HerStory will host a series of events that will allow Rider students and female leaders from beyond campus to present their literary work as well as share other talents that will include workshops and performances of music, dance, health and leadership training.

HerStory is accepting submissions until Monday, December 15, for the first issue. Please submit original work to herstory@rider.edu.
