Diversity of Traditions Light Up Evening
Students, faculty and staff took the time to recognize the themes of light and unity that seem to prevail throughout the various traditions of the holiday season during the 17th annual Celebration of Lights held on December 11 in BLC Cavalla Room



Future Teachers Learn Through Giving
Rider’s Student Education Association (SEA) captured the spirit of the season, brightening the lives of a recent Rider graduate and her students just in time for the holidays. More than 75 volunteers from the School of Education recently collected approximately $1,000 worth of school supplies to donate to Lynnette Dortrait’s class at Liberty Academy Charter School in Jersey City, N.J.

Dr. Diane Casale-Giannola says that while her students have much to offer their visitors in the Rider Friendships program, their guests do not arrive for their monthly visits in Memorial Hall with nothing in return. Giannola, an associate professor of Teacher Education, launched the program in October to allow young area adults with varied developmental disabilities to interact in a social experience with their typical functioning peers – in this case, special education students from Rider’s Teacher Education program.



A Reel Honor: Student Recognized for Gender, Film Studies Paper
Meg Holland, a student in Rider’s College of Continuing Studies, recently presented a paper at the Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association conference, where she received the Daniel Walden Student Paper Competition award for best undergraduate work.

Sophomore Broadcasting Student Keeps Focus
Recently, Gina Grosso had a chance to get up close and personal with music sensations Paramour, Brandy, Chris Brown, Jesse McCartney and Rhianna, filming interviews of the top stars backstage at Z100’s Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden. The sophomore Communication major jokes that she spends most of her time inside the Rider University Network studio, but Grosso knows she is developing skills that will help her broadcasting career. “That’s the entire reason why I came here, because I was able to get hands-on experience right from the beginning,” she explained.



End of Semester Shuttle Service Schedule
The Rider University Student Shuttle Service will be ending for the fall semester on Monday, December 15, with its final arrival in Princeton at 11:25 p.m.



Be Heard In HerStory — Submit Original Work for New Journal
HerStory, a new feminist literary journal created by Rider students, is looking for submissions. The journal will make its debut this March on the Lawrenceville campus.

University Celebrates Season of Giving Through Service
With Thanksgiving just days away, and the holidays approaching, the entire Rider community has been spreading the cheer and the spirit of giving through a number of service projects to benefit individual and families in the local community.

Rider Students, Alumni Part of the Family at Johnson & Johnson
A record number of six students and one recent graduate, including Jennifer Arnell, Matt Cardia, Mike Dill and Kevin Mazzella, have been accepted into Johnson & Johnson's leadership development program. They will join the more than 230 Rider alumni already working for the organization.



Student Teachers Learn 'On the Job'
It was John Cotton Dana, a giant of education in the lore of New Jersey, who said, “Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” For the past two years, a number of Teacher Education students at Rider University have had the opportunity to simultaneously do both while enriching the minds of underprivileged children in Trenton.

Anti-Sexist Activist, Educator to Visit Lawrenceville Campus
Jackson Katz, anti-sexist male activist and educator, will give a lecture on Wednesday, December 3, at 7 p.m. in the BLC Theater.



Students Share Work With Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Junot Diaz
Students from Rider University’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) had a chance to share their work with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz during the EOP Distinguished Writers Series event on Wednesday, November 19, on the Lawrenceville campus.



Choirs, Bands to Sing In, Ring In, Sounds of the Season
This holiday season, Rider University will be mixing old traditions with new ones during winter concerts held on the Lawrenceville campus. All concerts are free and open to the public.



Family Weekend 2008 at Lawrenceville
Rider University’s Family Weekend drew students and their families to the Lawrenceville campus for three days of fun from November 7 to 9. There was something for everyone, including performances, athletic games and the Founder’s Day program, which recognized 62 Andrew J. Rider Scholars. Students and their families also had a chance to see the men’s basketball team get a win and some of Rider’s talented performers appear in the fall theater production Cabaret.

Every member of the Rider community can potentially contribute to making the University a more sustainable place, tapping into the special technical or academic skills, leadership ability organizational aptitude or passion for the earth’s future. To invite broader participation in sustainability efforts, the Energy and Sustainability Steering Committee has announced a grants program open to individuals, clubs, departments and operating units across the University.



Tennis Walk-on Nets Advantage Through Mentors
Rider head tennis coach Ed Torres recognized Alex D’Amico’s talent on the court, pushing him to maximize his ability. D’Amico, a second-year Andrew J. Rider Scholar, gave the student address during the Founder’s Day program on Saturday, November 8, focusing on the role of mentors in helping students strive to reach his or her potential.

Cultures Converge for International Week 2008
In a seven-day celebration of diverse perspectives from across the Earth, Rider University celebrated International Week 2008 on its Lawrenceville campus from October 17 through October 24.



Founder’s Day to Honor 62 Scholars
The Founder’s Day awards ceremony, a tradition that honors Rider’s top students as Andrew J. Rider Scholars, will begin at 11 a.m. in the BLC Theater on Saturday, November 8. The award, which is named for the founder and first president of the institution, honors the top one percent of sophomores, juniors and seniors in each of Rider's four academic colleges and schools — the College of Business Administration, College of Liberal Arts, Education, & Sciences, the College of Continuing Studies and Westminster College of the Arts.



Rider to Host Second Annual Goldstein Lecture on Prejudice Reduction
Rider University will host the Second Annual Marvin W. Goldstein Lecture on Prejudice Reduction on Wednesday, October 29, at 7 p.m. in the Bart Luedeke Center Theater on its Lawrenceville campus. All are invited to this free event.



Lights … Camera … Play Ball!
During the first two games of the recent National League Championship Series in Philadelphia, millions of viewers made sure to situate themselves in front of their televisions in time for the first pitch. And while those countless Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers fans sat in their living rooms, anxiously waiting for the game to begin, the home-plate umpire stood peering into the dugout at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Ballpark, looking for the signal from one Rider University junior that it was time to yell, “Play Ball!”



It’s So Easy Bein’ Green
In 1970, during the first season of Sesame Street, Kermit the Frog lamented that It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green, but in 2008, showing a commitment to preserving the environment and its natural resources couldn’t be much easier – or important. For that reason, Rider University and the Energy and Sustainability Steering Committee (ESSC) will celebrate its first Campus Sustainability Day on Wednesday, October 22.



Rider’s Midnight MAACness was Medieval Madness
About 35 years ago, college basketball coaches conceived a novel attention-getting ploy: beginning practice at the earliest possible time allowed under NCAA rules. Today, every basketball fan knows Midnight Madness as the hoopla surrounding the official start of the college basketball season, and the event is the ultimate pep rally and team promotion. On October 17 at Rider University, Alumni Gymnasium became the site of Midnight MAACness, with the entire campus mall being transformed into a renaissance village resembling what can be seen during a visit to a Medieval Times festival.



Unity Days Speaker, Donna Brazile, Encourages Campus to Strike Up Conversation
After Hurricane Katrina struck, Donna Brazile was called to action. At the time, her greatest challenge was sitting down with someone she thought she could not agree with – President George W. Bush. But, despite their differences, they were able to work together and agree on a plan to help rebuild New Orleans. This same message of cooperation resonated throughout Brazile’s keynote address during Rider’s Unity Days celebration.



Dr. David Walton to Deliver International Week Keynote Lecture
Dr. David Walton of the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, will speak on Medicine and Social Justice in the BLC Theater on October 21 at 6:30 p.m.



Westminster Symphonic Choir Performs Mozart's Requiem and Pärt’s Te Deum on October 24
The 240-voice Westminster Symphonic Choir and Westminster Festival Orchestra, conducted by Joe Miller, will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem and Arvo Pärt’s Te Deum on Friday, October 24 at 8 p.m. in the Princeton University Chapel.



Professor Art Simon to Speak at Movies in America Guest Speaker Series
The Movies in America Guest Speakers Series will host Professor Art Simon from Montclair State University on Monday, October 20, 2008 from 4 - 6 p.m. in Sweigart Auditorium.



Westminster Family Weekend Concert Features New Ensemble on October 25
Westminster Choir College of Rider University’s 2008 Family Weekend will be marked by two firsts on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Princeton Regional Schools Performing Arts Center at Princeton High School. It will be the first performance by the freshmen studying on Rider’s Westminster Choir College campus in Princeton who make up the Westminster Chapel Choir. It will also be the debut performance by the Rider Chapel Choir, the newest ensemble at Westminster College of the Arts, which is composed of freshmen and upperclass student on Rider’s Lawrenceville campus.



Midnight MAACness Goes Medieval
This year's Midnight MAACness will have a Middle Ages theme with the creation of a medieval village on the Campus Mall on Friday, October 17. All students are invited to the pre-MAACness event and experience knights, jesters, sword fights, games and a medieval feast beginning at 7 p.m. on the Campus Mall. The Midnight MAACness action will start at 10 p.m. in Alumni Gym.



Celebrate Rider's International Week October 17 - 24!
Rider's annual celebration of International Week will run from October 17th - 24th. Some of the highlights of the week include an international sports day with demonstrations of cricket and bocce, the grand opening of the Center for International Education, the International Opportunities Fair and a keynote address by Dr. David Walton.



Author and Cultural Historian Scott Sandage to Deliver 17th Annual Levine Lecture
Noted author and cultural historian Scott Sandage, recently named as one of America’s Top Young Historians by the History News Network, will deliver the 17th Annual Levine Lecture, presented by the Department of History at Rider University, on Thursday, October 16, at 7 p.m. in the Sweigart Auditorium.



Scholarships Give Student Chance to Reach Dream
Margaux Wisniewski says she was born to teach. But recently, when her husband was laid off from his primary job, Wisniewski knew she needed to finish her bachelor’s degree and get certified as a teacher. Scholarships made it possible for the College of Continuing Studies to follow her dream.



Phils Coste Into Playoffs as Catcher Inspires Students
Philadelphia Phillies catcher Chris Coste, who made his major league debut at the ripe old age of 33, visited Rider to talk about his lengthy journey through the minor leagues to the major leagues and help promote the new interdisciplinary Sports and Society minor to be offered soon by the College of Business Administration.



Come Together for Unity Days
“Responsible Citizenship At Home and Abroad” is the theme for this year’s Unity Days, which will feature the opening of the New World Resource Center and keynote speaker Donna Brazile. Colleges and universities across the country are pausing to celebrate National Campus Sustainability Day on Wednesday, October 22. Events on both the Lawrenceville and Princeton campus include a information sessions and a Sustainability Day Lecture given by Tom Szaky, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of TerraCycle, Inc., producer of the world's first products made from, and packaged, in waste.

Westminster Music and Books and Rider University Bookstore will be having their 11th Annual Student Appreciation Week starting on Monday, October 13 and ending on Friday, October 17.

Unitys Days activities for the campus community will kick off on October 14 at 4:30 p.m. with the opening of the New World Resource Center in the BLC. The Career Services Office has launched Broncs Career Link, a new automated system that empowers Rider University students and alumni, as well as prospective employers, throughout the job placement process by giving them the ability to manage their own accounts online while allowing Career Services to supervise the whole process.

Traditionally a singularly Princeton campus event, Westminster Choir College of Rider University’s Homecoming 2008 will unite both the Princeton and Lawrenceville campuses on Friday, September 26, and Saturday, September 27.

Mark your calendars to join the Energy and Sustainability Steering Committee for a 10-mile bike ride on the D&R Canal starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday, September 21. Members of the Rider community will be supporting the 100 Climate Riders who are cycling their way from New York City to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness about the global climate crisis.

Rider Celebrates Its History with a Splash of Cranberry
Andrew J. Rider, the founder and first president of the Trenton Business College, which eventually became Rider University, introduced the cranberry to the Queen of England. Impressed, she nicknamed him “The Cranberry King of New Jersey.” Since 1979, the University community has celebrated Rider’s history with Cranberry Fest, which features an outdoor luncheon, activities and free giveaways on the Campus Mall.

Buddy System Means Smooth Move-Ins for Rider Freshmen
Given college students’ penchant for snacking, it was understandable that 10 or 12 cranberry T-shirt-clad Rider students swarmed a golf cart that pulled up to the front of Conover Hall on Sunday, August 31. In this case, however, the golf cart, bearing boxes of Snickers and Twix bars, Starburst candies, and M&Ms, was a welcome relief for the students, who had weathered the strong morning sun to help incoming Rider freshmen and new students move into their respective residence halls.

Schoen’s Investment in Rider Pays a Return
Ask Ingrid Schoen ’86 about her career and the conversation will eventually lead back to Rider University. A College of Continuing Studies graduate now in pursuit of a master’s degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Supervision, Schoen says Rider played an integral role in her path to professional fulfillment. So much so, in fact, that when Schoen decided to close her educational retail business, she donated nearly $90,000 worth of inventory to Rider’s Curriculum Resource Center.

Rider Launches New Campus Shuttle System
Beginning on Wednesday, September 3, Rider University will be launching its new campus shuttle system. This new shuttle program will operate Monday to Thursday and Saturday. The weekday shuttle will connect the Lawrenceville and Princeton campuses and allow students to take advantage of academic and co-curricular opportunities on both campuses. The Saturday shuttle will link Rider students to the Mercer County region.

Cranberry Fest Brings Campus Community Together
Cranberry Fest, a tradition at Rider since 1979, will be held on Thursday, September 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Campus Mall. The event will feature live blue grass music, roving artists, carnival games, a cow milking contest, and a delicious cranberry themed menu. Remember to show your Rider pride during Cranberry Fest and wear your "I Bleed Cranberry" shirt!

New Student Move In Days
New students on the Princeton campus will move into residence halls on Wednesday, August 27, from 8 a.m.- noon, where student leaders will help welcome freshmen as they move in. Families are invited to lunch and our "Welcome to Westminster" session begins at 3:30 p.m. in Bristol Chapel. Lawrenceville new students will move into the residence halls on Sunday, August 31, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Upperclassmen for the new students called Bronc Buddies will be on hand to help new students move into their assigned residence halls. After the students move in and enjoy the family food-fest on the campus mall, a welcoming ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the SRC.

Graduate Sets Sights on Service Overseas
Eight-four dollars for 84 days. That’s been Colleen Kelly’s motto this summer while preparing for her upcoming adventure. In September, Kelly, who recently graduated magna cum laude from Rider University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, will travel to New Delhi, India, where she plans to volunteer in a number of service-oriented jobs.

Go Broncs! Once Again, Student-Athletes Make the Grade
According to the Spring 2008 report issued by NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Jonathan Husch, the Broncs collectively registered a 3.06 grade point average for the semester, marking the highest collective GPA ever produced by Rider student-athletes.
