The MABLSA Incoming Law Student Scholarship

Purpose: To provide financial support to incoming law students who support the mission of the National Black Law Students Association. For more information about NBLSA, please visit www.nblsa.org.

Qualification: The ideal candidate will join the incoming class of 2011 at a law school in the Mid-Atlantic region, beginning August 2008. Mid-Atlantic law schools are listed on page two. 

Instructions
Scholarship applicants must submit the following:
1. A resume
2. A 500 word essay on the role of the African-American Attorney in the 21st Century.
3. A copy (not the original) of an acceptance letter from a Mid-Atlantic law school.

Award
MABLSA will award 5 to 10 students with scholarships in the amount of $1,500.00.

MINERAL PHYSICS INSTITUTE SUMMER SCHOLARS

 Supported by a Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) grant through NSF, the Mineral Physics Institute sponsors scholarships for selected undergraduates to work at Stony Brook in a 10-week summer program of intense research. From the time of its inception in 1992 through 2007, 112 students from a variety of undergraduate major fields of study at institutions across the United States have completed individual research projects in this "Summer Scholars" program. The diversity of scientists at the Mineral Physics Institute enables us to offer exciting projects to all student participants. (For examples of recent projects see our web site at www.mpi.stonybrook.edu/SummerScholars). Each student has the opportunity to work in our state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities including the National Synchrotron Light Source at nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory. Past students’ projects have led them to use more distant research facilities such as the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory and others overseas. During the ten-week program, students conduct individual result-oriented projects. Their experiences cover most of the fundamental elements of academic research including reporting of the results to other scientists. The student-advisor relationship in the summer program is modeled after the relationship between the graduate students and their advisors in our affiliate, the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University. Thus, students are given individual projects and a good deal of independence and responsibility. At the same time, the advisors are always available for consultation and guidance. In the first weeks of the program, the advisors spend time training the students on technique and safety. During the following weeks, the students and advisors have almost daily contact in the laboratories. When not working in the laboratories, group housing in the Stony Brook residence halls and extracurricular activities provide for an excellent social experience as well. Extracurricular activities have included behind the scenes visits to: the American Museum of Natural History, the FBI, the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institute, and the Smithsonian Institution. Other activities have included exploration of the upper Carmans River by canoe or kayak, fishing excursions on Long Island Sound, attending a New York Yankees or Mets game and a camping field trip to the Adirondacks.

Financial Support
Student participants receive a $3,800 stipend, travel allowance (up to $600) and paid housing on the University campus.

Prerequisites
To be eligible for this program, undergraduate students must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have completed 60 academic credits or at least one half (1/2) of the total credits required for graduation. Students who will graduate prior to the start of the Summer Scholars Program are not eligible. Additionally, potential participants must have an interest in a research career in Earth Sciences, Physics or Chemistry.

SCHOLARSHIP - NJ Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission

The Martin Luther King Jr. Commission annually awards scholarships fo $5000 to college students whose fields of study advance the philosophies of the late civil rights leader and have a direct impact upon the development and enhancement of labor, justice, social and economic policies.  Recipients must be enrolled full-time at an accredited institute of higher learning in New Jersey and be a permanent resident of the state.  This year the King Commission will award ten such scholarships.

THE  MAEE  JUMP-START  SCHOLARSHIPS FOR  PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS
(TWO  $1000  AWARDS)

INTRODUCTION:

The Mid-Atlantic Association for Employment in Education (MAEE), an organization which promotes professional standards and practices in teacher preparation and job placement, recognizes that   a.)  there is a shortage of college students from racial/ethnic minority groups preparing for careers in teaching, and  b.)  there is a shortage of candidates in general preparing for careers in certain teaching fields, for example mathematics (see reverse side for all eligible areas of certification).  This scholarship program is designed to address these special needs.  Only colleges holding membership in MAEE are eligible to participate.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY:

Candidates for these awards will have completed 48 credits, but not more than 90 credits (completed by 9/1/07), and will continue in the Spring 2008 semester, as full-time students. Applicants must hold U.S. citizenship. Actual dollars will be awarded in the Spring 2008 semester, directly to the college business office account in said student’s name, pending confirmation of minority status and/or enrollment in appropriate major by the Dean or comparable administrator.  This award is a one-time, non-renewable grant designed to “jump-start” the careers of these promising teacher candidates in the identified critical need areas.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Students applying for the $1000 Scholarship for Diversity in Teaching must be members of a racial or ethnic minority group formally accepted in any teacher certification major.  Students applying for the $1000 Critical Need Teacher Scholarship must be any student formally accepted in a “critical need area” as identified by the MAEE Executive Board based on “Supply and Demand” research (see reverse side for all eligible areas of certification). Students will submit a one-page application, official transcripts, and a one-page essay; candidates will be selected through a consideration of their academic success, service to college and/or community, and potential to achieve excellence as a teacher.  Students may apply for both scholarships, but would be eligible to win only one.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

Applications will be available through the MAEE college representatives; the MAEE college reps will also distribute guidelines and applications to key people on their campuses beginning in September, 2007.  Applications and official transcripts will be due postmarked by the November 1, 2007 deadline, and forwarded to the MAEE Scholarship Committee Chairperson.  The Scholarship Committee will make recommendations (including alternates) to the MAEE Executive Board at its annual Jan./Feb. meeting.  Recipients will be informed of their status and awarded monies during the Spring semester, 2008.

UNION SCHOLARS PROGRAM

UNCF operates with this program as an innovative and progressive strategy aimed at expanding the minority workforce of the ASFCME Organization throughout the US.  We arrange scholarships that include internships and mentorship's for rising college juniors and seniors in disciplines specifically requested by and tailored to the needs of AFSCME.  The initiative fosters long-term relationships among the student, AFSCME and the participating institution.  The Union Scholar Program helps to significantly improve the ability to recruit, retain and develop outstanding diverse talent and to utilize such talent to improve organizational capability and overall competitiveness.

TRIBAL LANDS ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

This program's intent is to enable Native Americans to work for the environmental protection of tribal lands by assisting them in their pursuit of environmental science degrees.  Full-time junior, senior and graduate students majoring in an environmental discipline are eligible to compete for the scholarships.  Students compete based on grade-point average, knowledge of Indian culture, commitment to environmental protection, character and leadership ability, level of study and work experience.

EPA works with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society to select the scholarship winners.  Students wishing to apply should do so through AISES, which has chapters on many college campuses and may be contacted at

MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP

In recognition of the global nature of environmental challenges and the need to pool the resources of many nations to solve environmental problems, EPA has joined with the United Kingdom's Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission, which as been administering the esteemed Marshall Scholarship since 1953.  Through the EPA Marshall Scholarship, up to three talented individuals with strong backgrounds in environmentally relevant sciences are selected each year to receive up to five years of graduate education assistance.  The first two years are supported by the UK, through a Marshall Scholarship to a university in Great Britain.  Successful candidates may receive up to three additional years of support towards a doctoral degree, either in England or in the US.  Applications are due each year on October 1.  Go to the Marshall Scholarship web site for more information:

NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The NYC Department of Education's Graduate Scholarship Program prepares its participants to work in NYC Public Schools, teaching in the critical shortage areas of Math(Grades 5-7 and 7-12) Sciences, ESL, Bilingual Special ED, Monolingual and Bilingual Speech Language Pathology/Audiology(Speech and Hearing Handicapped) Monolingual and Bilingual Visually Impaired, and Bilingual School Psychology. 

Candidate requirements: Bachelor degree with a GPA of 3.0 ( in certain circumstances a GPA of slightly lower than 3.0 might be acceptable); a US Citizen or have permanent resident status; Have been accepted unconditionally as  fully matriculated graduate student at a participating college/university, details of which depend on the subject.
