Questions You Should Ask

Candidates can ask questions, too!

1. What is the primary role of this department?
2. Would you describe what my duties would be?
3. What kind of person are you looking for?
4. What is the most important responsibility this person will have?  
5. What is your company's biggest challenge? 
6. What role would you like me to have in meeting that challenge?
7. To whom would I report?
8. What is my potential boss's background?
9. Who are the other people I will work with?
10. Which will be my most important relationships- clients, customers, other employees?
11. Where will I be situated (office setting); what kind of equipment will I have?
12. Are there performance reviews?
13. What learning opportunities are there?

Questions that teacher candidates may ask the district:

1. Are extracurricular assignments available for teachers interested in after school activities?
2. How many students participate in extracurricular activities?
3. Does your school district offer faculty in-service training and professional development programs during the school year? 
4. What reading series do you use in the upper grades (if this information is not available on the district web site)?
5. During the past few years, what has been the average faculty turnover rate?
6. What are teacher-student classroom ratios in my subject area?
7. Is there a budget established for supplies which need to be purchased during the school year?
8. Do you have an active teacher-parent organization?
9. What percentage of your graduates continue their education?
10. What is the retention rate for secondary students?
11. Are there opportunities for team teaching or team planning?
12. What types of support personnel are employed by this district (e.g., consultants, coordinators, counselors, school social workers, etc.)?
13. Who is responsible for instruction in the use of resource materials in your library?
14. Is there a required number of professional committees a staff member should be involved in during a school year?
15. Which yearly meetings provide an opportunity for staff to interact with parents?
