EVALUATION METHODS: Your application will be evaluated according to the extent and quality of experience, education, and training. If you possess the basic qualifications for the Community Supervision Officer (CSO) position, you will be required to complete a computer-based writing assessment. The writing assessment will test your skills in the areas of grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence and paragraph construction, and presentation of ideas. Your performance on the computer-based writing assessment will be evaluated to determine if you are among the best qualified. Best qualified candidates will be required to attend a structured interview. The structured interview will assess Decision Making, Influencing/Negotiating, Interpersonal Skills, Planning and Evaluation, Oral Communication, and Self-Management to further distinguish among top applicants for this position. This evaluation determines which candidates will be referred to the selecting official for consideration.
WRITING TEST DATES AND LOCATION: The writing assessments will take place in Washington, D.C. on June 23, 24, 25, 27, 30 and July 1, 2008 between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm by appointment only.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION: Scanned copies of official transcripts will be accepted during the initial application process; however, official certified transcripts will be required from the best-qualified applicants prior to their participation in the structured interview.

DUTIES:(The duties described reflect the full performance level of this position)
The incumbent oversees persons placed on probation and parole in the community through direct counseling, coordination of supportive services, monitoring of re-arrests, etc., in accordance with case classification standards. Visits correctional institutions, hospitals, clinics, service providers and community agencies, etc., as well as attends judicial conferences and formal court hearings pertaining to offenders under incumbent's supervision. Based on independent evaluation of circumstances, produces written reports and makes oral presentations to provide information; makes recommendations to Judges or Parole Board regarding the disposition of assigned cases.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent will be required to successfully complete a seven-week formal training program.
MINIMUM FEDERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 05: BASIC REQUIREMENTS
A. Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in the behavioral or social sciences, or in a related discipline that included at least 24 semester/36 quarter hours in the behavioral or social sciences.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
OR
C. Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. Examples of qualifying experience include assisting a higher-graded official in the supervision of offenders and monitoring their activities and their compliance with the terms and conditions set forth by the releasing authority. Such experience includes working with higher graded officials in organizing and facilitating workshops and support group meetings for offenders, and assisting with investigating offenders' criminal and social backgrounds including, but not limited to, criminal history, social, health, educational, employment, and family situations in order to assess the offenders' needs and level of risk for community supervision.
Grade 07: BASIC REQUIREMENTS
A. Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in the behavioral or social sciences, or in a related discipline that included at least 24 semester/36 quarter hours in the behavioral or social sciences.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had either specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below. Education and experience may be combined to meet the total experience requirements.
1. The applicant must have completed one (1) year of graduate level education OR be eligible for the superior academic achievement provision when it provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
OR
2. One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL-5.
Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include assisting a higher-graded Community Supervision Officer in monitoring the activities of the offender and providing assistance in the following areas: managing cases, conducting investigations, preparing reports, attending hearings and making court appearances, and collaborating with members of the community to implement various strategies that focus on decreasing the rate of recidivism of offenders.
Qualifying experience for the GL-7 level includes one year of specialized experience or Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GL-5. Specialized is experience is experience which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) is based on (1) class standing – applicants must be in the upper third of their graduating class in college or university; (2) grade point average (G.P.A.) – applicant must have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (“B” or better) as recorded on their official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education, or (3) as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum or National Scholastic Honor Society membership.

MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE: Because this position is covered under Law Enforcement Officer retirement provisions, first-time law enforcement appointees must not have reached their 37th birthday at the time of appointment. Applicants 37 or older who have previous law enforcement officer experience under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or the Federal Employees Retirement Systems (FERS) may have their previous law enforcement officer experience subtracted from their age to determine whether they meet the maximum entry age requirement. SALARY RANGE: $39,155.00-$56,366.00
