Outreach Coordinator

Denver Zoo

The Outreach Coordinator works closely with the Outreach Manager and other Outreach staff to develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate school and community programs off Denver Zoo grounds.

Essential Functions

• Develop, coordinate, instruct and evaluate a range of current outreach programs off Denver Zoo grounds, including:
-Classroom and assembly programs
-Afterschool and enrichment programs
-Senior programs (Senior Safari)
-Service-Learning programs (Community Leadership Project)
-Booths at community fairs and festivals
-General promotion of Denver Zoo activities (Speakers Bureau)
-Long-distance programs (overnight trips 2-5 days in length)
• Develop, coordinate, instruct and evaluate all new outreach education programs
• Manage revenue and expenses for outreach programs budget
• Provide supervision and leadership to outreach staff and volunteers
• Develop and implement marketing strategies for creating awareness of outreach programs
• Support program logistics of outreach programs (registrations and confirmations, customer service, payment processing)
• Handle live animals and biofacts (animal specimens) in education programs
• Work with animal staff to coordinate and support animal use in a variety of offsite programming
• Work closely with Outreach Manager to guide future program direction
• Support a variety of other education programs, including on-site school programs.


Additional Functions
• Facilitate volunteer training in areas of relevance
• Maintain excellent communications with Education personnel, volunteers and other Zoo staff
• Participate in Education and zoo-wide leadership activities, including Education Strategic Planning

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in science, education or a related field
• General knowledge of biological and environmental sciences
• Dynamic and enthusiastic teaching skills
• Curriculum development and implementation experience
• Program coordination and supervisory experience
• Experience managing a budget
• Excellent oral and written skills
• Excellent organizational and logistical skills
• Microsoft Office suite skills
• Ability to work dexterously with hands and arms and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to handle and present a variety of live animals
• A valid Colorado driver license (must be obtained prior to start date). A clean driving record is required
• Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus
• Able to work some weekends


Work Environment
This position requires a substantial amount of contact with staff, volunteers and other departments, members and the general public. The employee works in a busy environment with multiple simultaneous tasks.

Compensation
Salary Range: $32,000-$36,000. This position is a full-time Denver Zoological Foundation employee, complete medical benefits, 403(b) retirement plan, and generous vacation package.
