This position will start out assigned as a Visitor Assistant Supervisor with the Capitol Guide Service and then be transitioned as a Visitor Assistant Supervisor with the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the CEO for Visitor Services, as part of the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC).

DUTIES:
This position serves as a Visitor Assistant Supervisor for the United States Capitol Visitor Center (CVC). The incumbent is responsible for the daily/shift supervision of Visitor Assistants in the CVC and the implementation of policies that will fulfill the mission of security, visitor comfort, and education. Supervises a team of Visitor Assistants in providing support and information to the general public visiting the CVC. Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit. Performs the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised. Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff members, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system. Observes workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques. Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Resolves informal complaints and grievances.
Responsible for leading and managing a team of Visitor Assistants in carrying out the daily operation of the CVC including: managing flow and efficiency in the CVC core space, directing the visitors in the event of an emergency or evacuation, management of all assigned Visitor Assistants, visitor satisfaction with CVC experience, and appearance of visitor assistant staff. Responsible for handling daily operational concerns such as: long queue lines, lost children, advance reservation pass questions, visitor concerns, exhibit malfunctions, etc.
Develops and maintains positive, responsive relationships with CVC staff and peers. Ensures guests of Congressional Member offices are handled appropriately and integrated into the flow of the visitor experience.
Monitors the utilization of resources required to accomplish daily operations. Performs basic evaluation of operations to assure that program objectives receive proper consideration and recommends changes or improvements to the Visitor Services Assistant Director for Operations. Coordinates with the Visitor Services Assistant Director for Operations to make recommendations for short-term operating budgets for personnel services, supplies, and materials.
Ensures aspects of the visitor experience are carried out, such as addressing advance reservations, bus arrivals, visitor assistance, greeting visitors, checking coats, orientation of visitors, orientation theater loading/operation, special transportation arrangements, time pass delivery, answering phone calls, and assisting visitors requiring information.
Ensures Visitor Assistants are properly assembling groups, explaining the group activity, and outlining any precautionary measures required. Verifies that order is maintained when managing very large groups of visitors in unfamiliar surroundings where there may be a potential for injury or accident.
Supervises the ushering or leading large groups of visitors in and out of the CVC. Ensures Visitor Assistants are providing accurate information and timely assistance to visitors about the content of the exhibits in the Exhibition Gallery. Verifies that Visitor Assistants are communicating the correct information on the length of time an exhibit will be on display and from where the exhibit was received. Provides general information on all artifacts and exhibits throughout the CVC. Provides guidance to visitors on where certain exhibits are located in the CVC.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to supervise a team that provides visitor services to the general public in a large public venue, such as a museum, visitor center, or comparable public facility.
Ability to develop and promote a diverse workforce.
Ability to meet and deal with varied audiences and resolve issues or concerns.
Ability to plan work and meet deadlines to support visitor operations in a large public venue.
Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have experience with leading teams charged with providing visitor services to the general public in a large venue, such as a museum, visitor center, or other public facility.
MINIMUM FEDERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifying experience for the GS-10 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-9 level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. The experience must have involved providing service and information to the general public in a large public venue, such as a museum, visitor center, or comparable public facility. This experience included addressing concerns of visitors/customers and resolving problems while maintaining a high degree of customer service and diplomacy.

The incumbent is responsible for leading and managing daily operation of tours and tour guides, including: managing tour flow and efficiency, directing the visitors in the event of an emergency or evacuation, management of all tour guides, ensuring quality of the interpretative experience, visitor satisfaction with tour experience, and appearance of guide staff. Responsible for handling daily operational concerns such as: functioning of audio headsets, obstructions on tour routes in the Capitol, visitor concerns, etc.

Verifies that order is maintained when managing very large groups of visitors in unfamiliar surroundings where there may be a potential for injury or accident.
Supervises the ushering or leading large groups of visitors in and out of the Capitol. Provides information and assistance to visitors about the content of the tours.
Provides assistance to parties that require special attention, such as distinguished visitors, disabled persons, and photographic enthusiasts. Assesses the physical characteristics of visitors in the group, arranges for safety factors to accommodate any special needs and avoid potential safety hazards.
