Room Selection Information Fall 2008

1. What is the room selection schedule? |
March 14: $200 room deposit must be received by the Cashier’s Office Students who miss this deadline will not participate in Room Selection and will be placed on a wait list for housing! | 2. Who is guaranteed housing? | All rising second, third and fourth year students who pay their housing deposit by March 14, 2008 and submit their housing contract by March 30, 2008, will be able to reside on campus. However, some students may not receive a standard double room assignment during Room Selection. | ||||||||||||||||
| 3. Is everyone guaranteed a standard double room? | No. Some students will be placed on a waiting list to be assigned to a standard double room. We know from previous years that spaces will become available after room selection. Therefore, many students will have a standard double room assignment by the start of the fall semester. Those who do not will be tripled in a double room. | ||||||||||||||||
| 4. Can three students pick a triple room? |
Yes, some rooms have been identified as standard triples and may be selected by three students. In addition, the following double rooms have been identified as 'Temporary Triple Room' spaces (for the fall semester only). Who is not eligible to participate in Room Selection? | Students with start terms prior to 05/FA, graduate students, current commuters, students who have withdrawn and are seeking readmission and students who do not course select can all pay the housing deposit and be placed on the waiting list. These groups are not eligible to room select and will not receive lottery numbers. | ||||||||||||||||
| 6. What is a lottery number? | Each resident who pays his or her $200.00 room deposit by March 14th will be assigned a random number (according to their start term group). Residents will select their housing assignment based on their number. | ||||||||||||||||
| 7. How is the lottery number assigned? |
A random number will be given to each student. Students will be grouped by their start term and numbers will correlate to that start term. For example,

| 8. What are the start term groups? | Rising second year students have start terms 07/FA and 08/SP Rising third year students have start terms 06/FA and 07/SP Rising fourth year students have start terms 05/FA and 06/SP | ||||||||||||||||
| 9. Can lottery numbers be sold or traded with another resident? | No. Lottery numbers cannot be sold or traded. Residence Life maintains a database with every resident’s name and assigned lottery number. This database is closely monitored. | ||||||||||||||||
| 10. When will I get my lottery number? | On Sunday, March 23rd, from 2:00-11:00pm, Residence Hall students must report to their hall office to pick up their housing agreements and lottery numbers. Returning Greek students will be issued their housing agreements and lottery numbers at Returning Greek Room Selection on March 25th. Greek new members will receive their lottery number and housing agreement on March 26th at New Greek Room Selection. If your housing agreement and lottery number are not available when you go to get it, contact Residence Life immediately at 609-896-5057. | ||||||||||||||||
| 11. What do I need to do to participate in Room Selection? |
*The $200 non-refundable housing deposit must BE RECEIVED by the Cashier’s Office by March 14th, 2008. To insure payment on time, we recommend you pay in person or make a credit card payment by calling (609)896-5390. Students who do not meet the deposit and room selection deadlines will be placed on a wait list for housing.

| 12. How do I apply for Lincoln Hall? | Lincoln suites will be part of the Premium Room Selection process (see question #26). Six person suite applications are available now in the BLC, 115. The deadline to apply is March 14, 2008. | ||||||||||||||||
| 13. What do I have to bring to Room Selection? |

| 14. What if I do not pay the housing deposit by March 14th? | Although we will accept your deposit and issue you a housing agreement, you will automatically be placed on the waiting list. It is not likely that you will get a room assignment. | ||||||||||||||||
| 15. Are double singles available next Fall? | No. The anticipated demand for Rider housing does not permit double/singles. We will accept applications but it is highly unlikely they will be approved. We will keep applications on file and if any are approved, it will be based on accumulated credits and date of application. | ||||||||||||||||
| 16. What if I cannot attend standard room selection? | You may submit your housing application and lottery card to Residence Life prior to March 30th, or designate another student to participate for you at your designated time. Students who pay a housing deposit but do not submit their housing application by March 30th will be placed on a waiting list. | ||||||||||||||||
| 17. Do I have to have a roommate to select a room? | No, if your number is called you will be permitted to select a room. Residence Life will match you with the next single student whose number is called. | ||||||||||||||||
| 18. What if I want to request an air conditioner? | Air conditioners are not permitted in student rooms. Any exceptions will be considered for medical conditions only. All requests must be submitted via the Rider specific medical form by March 14th. See www.rider.edu/housing to print this form for your physician. | ||||||||||||||||
| 19. Is the deposit refundable? | The $200.00 room deposit is non refundable for students who voluntarily break their housing agreement. Students may request a refund anytime before we are able to offer a standard room assignment. Once you have been offered a standard room assignment, the deposit will not be refundable, so please remember to request the deposit refund if your plans change after you are placed on the wait list. | ||||||||||||||||
| 20. Can I select a roommate who is in the Junior Year Abroad program? | Yes, provided he or she has paid the $200 room deposit and submitted their housing agreement to Residence Life. | ||||||||||||||||
| 21. May I select a roommate with a different start term? | Yes, but rising fourth year students will pick first, followed by rising third year, and then rising second year. | ||||||||||||||||
| 22. May I reserve the room I presently live in? | In order to give everyone an equal chance to get a standard room assignment, squatter’s rights have been eliminated. Every eligible student must go through the process and choose from the rooms that are available at their time slot. | ||||||||||||||||
| 23. What if I want to live with a specific new student? | You may sign up for a room only if the Residence Life Office has received the Housing Agreement of the new student. To verify this, come to Residence Life by Friday, March 28th. We will give you an authorization note to submit at Room Selection. | ||||||||||||||||
| 24. I joined a Greek organization this year, how do I get a room in the house? | Greek Room Selection process will be on March 25th for returning Greeks and March 26th for new members. Visit www.rider.edu/greeklife and click on House Management for more information. | ||||||||||||||||
| 25. How do I know when my standard room selection time slot is? |

| 26. How do I apply for Premium Room Selection? | New this year! Lincoln suites are part of the Premium Room Selection process. Students who are interested in living in an apartment or suite must complete a group application. Applications are available in the BLC 115 and the Residence Life Area Office between Olson and Switlik. If you are approved for Premium Room Selection you are eligible to select suites and apartments in the existing halls and in the new residence hall. After March 14, applications are reviewed by Residence Life for verification of room deposit, disciplinary history and completion of course selection for next fall. Students will be notified of their Premium Room Selection status on Sunday, March 23rd. The Lottery will occur on Tuesday, March 25 at 10:00pm in the Cavalla Room in the BLC. Room types will be called in the following order: • Five person pod suites in Hill and Ziegler (one triple room and one double room pod) • Four person apartments and 4 person suites in the New Building, and four person pod suites in Hill and Ziegler • Three person apartments and 3 person suites • Two person apartments and 2 person suites • Six person suites in Lincoln The lottery numbers of each applicant will be added together to get the total of each group application. Groups will be called to select a suite or apartment based on the total of the group’s lottery points. | ||||||||||||||||

| 28. How can I get help if I am placed in a triple and still want a standard double room? | We know from previous years that spaces will become available after room selection. Therefore, many students will have a standard double room assignment by the start of the fall semester. | ||||||||||||||||
| 29. Will moving off campus impact my financial aid? |
You must notify the Office of Student Financial Services whenever your housing status changes. Students who reside off campus, but not at home, are also required to provide a signed copy of their lease for review by a financial aid counselor. Many students with valid leases qualify for the same financial aid they would have received in on-campus housing. Contact your financial aid counselor for further details. | ||||||||||||||||
| Students are expected to conduct themselves with integrity and respect at all times during the Room Selection Process. Manipulation of the Room Selection Process results in fewer housing options for all students and a more stressful experience overall. Students are invited to report any manipulation of the system to the Residence Life Office |
