What is a Resident Advisor? |
What are the responsibilities of a Resident Advisor?
The RA takes on many different responsibilities. He/she will organize activities for the residents on his/her floor; be available to assist students in many different capacities; be knowledgeable of the condition of the floor and maintain an environment conducive to both academic endeavors and community interaction; be "on duty" on a rotating basis with other staff in their residence hall in the evening to maintain an appropriate atmosphere and deal with emergencies; assist with the opening and closing of the halls; maintain all room inventory forms and do periodic room checks to ensure the safety of the residents; and above all act as a responsible leader and as a positive role model for all students.
How will the position benefit my personal growth?
Through training and interaction with other staff, administration, faculty and students, there will be many opportunities for personal growth. The opportunity to develop skills through participation in workshops on communication skills, time management, stress management, assertiveness training, community building, programming, leadership development, etc. enable you to take a closer look at yourself and provide you with the skills to help others in the process.
Staff Training
Some of the topics covered in training sessions include: Community Building, Mediation Skills, Connecting Student to the Rider Community, Community Values, Housing Policies and Procedures, Crisis and Emergency Preparedness, Fire Safety and Simulation, Sexual Assault Response, Confrontation and Crisis Management Skills
RA Class - 3 Credit Sequence
- RA I CLASS (Required)
This 1 credit pass/fail pre-employment class provides RA candidates with basic job knowledge and skills. Classes are held during open periods on Wednesday at 4:30pm and Thursday at 11:30am and begins on February 11th & 12th running through March 25th & 26th. All candidates are required to take this course. Candidates must pass this course in order to be eligible for employment. - RA II CLASS (Required)
This 1 credit pass/fail is taken during the Fall semester and class helps to strengthen skills learned both in RA I and during Fall training. This class also serves as one of the ways to support staff throughout their first semester on the job. The class meets weekly during open periods on Wednesdays at 4:30pm or Thursdays at 11:30am for the full academic semester. - RA III CLASS (Optional)
This 1 credit pass/fail class is offered to RA’s who have completed RA I and II. RA III is a project-based class. RA III is about trying to make the Residence Life Office better by creating projects that will improve the effectiveness of the RA position and/or the department as a whole.
What is the compensation for the Resident Advisor position?
Resident Advisors will be paid a salary on a monthly basis and receive a scholarship to be applied to their tuition bill. RAs reside in a single room at the double rate. Resident Advisors are generally hired for an academic year (August through May).

How are Resident Advisors selected?
To become a Resident Advisor you must meet several criteria:
1) Any other employment or other major commitments must be approved in advance.
2) Should have a 2.3 cumulative average at time of application, and maintain a 2.3 GPA.
3) To be a student in good standing with the University.
4) Should have resided in residential housing at least one term.

| RA I Class (Required) | February 11th & 12th - March 25 & 26th. (Candidates will select either a Wednesday at 4:30PM -6PM section or a Thursday at 11:30AM-1PM section. The course instructor will enroll students and contact candidates for their class time preference. |
