Women 10-2 at Monmouth Rider Men 9-2
WEST LONG BRANCHThe Rider track & field teams began the 2007 outdoor season at the Monmouth Season Opener meet Saturday, with the women defeating 10 of 12 opponents, and the men defeating nine of 11 opponents. We did pretty well today, said Rider head coach Rob Pasquariello. It was a real solid, positive performance.
Senior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne/Wayne Valley) won the hammer with an ECAC qualifying toss of 1619 and placed second in both the shot put (464.25) and the discus (1462). Sophomore Kelly Kajunski (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) won the high jump (54) and placed fifth in the triple jump (34 0.75).
For the Rider men, the 4 x 100 relay of senior David Payne (Neptune), junior Randy Nixon (Manorville, NY/West Hampton), sophomore Desmond Hamilton (Pennsauken) and sophomore AJ Parillo (South River) won in a meet record and an IC4A qualifying time of 41.54. Payne was second in the 100m (11.15).
Junior Paul Matuszak (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was second in the 5,000m (15:31.51)
Junior Elizabeth Clatch (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area) was second in the javelin with an ECAC qualifying toss of 132, and twin sister junior Rebecca Clatch (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area) was fourth (1279). Elizabeth had a terrible year physically last year, Pasquariello said. She has a disc condition (back injury) that really limited her last year, and had a tough sophomore year after a great high school career. For her to come back and get that qualifying mark is really tremendous. It shows her perseverance.
Freshman Karlise Cureton (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) was second in the 100m hurdles (15.30).
Senior Doug Beck (Branchburg/Somerville) placed third in the discus with an IC4A qualifying toss of 1609, Parillo placed third in both the long jump (218.25) and the 400m (49.62). Junior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach/Matawan) was third in the 5,000m (15:17.17) and Nixon was fourth in the 110m hurdles (15.57). Senior Danny Enck (Lititz, PA/Warwick) placed fifth in the hammer (1644).
Sophomore Tabatha Haskins (Medford/Shawnee) placed third in the triple jump (356.75) and fifth in the long jump (172.25). Senior Katie OConnor (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) placed third in the high jump (52), senior Allyson Angelo (Brick/Red Bank Catholic) placed third in the pole vault (10).
Freshman Jennifer Alksmant (Forked River/Lacey Township) placed fourth in the discus (1256), freshman Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) was fourth in the shot put (3810.5) and senior Lauren Deane (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) placed fifth in the hammer (1143).
Outdoors there are a lot more variables to deal with, like the weather, and we were real happy with the way both teams handled the weather conditions, Pasquariello said. It was brisk and windy and they went out and had persistence in their performance.
