Junior Don Fisch (Williamstown, N.J./Delsea) placed fifth in the nation in the 141 pound weight class Saturday morning at the 2007 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in the Palace of Auburn Hills. As a team, Rider placed 30th overall. Fisch pinned the seventh seed, Brandon Rader of West Virginia in 3:42 in the battle for fifth place. Unseeded in the tournament, Fisch won his first three matches over the fifth, 12th and fourth seeds, before losing a controversial 3-2 decision to the top seed in the semi-finals Friday night. Junior 197 T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff) defeated Patrick Bond of Illinois 2-1 in overtime Friday afternoon in the consolations before being pinned in 2:35 by the tenth seed, Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan.  Morrison went 2-2 at Nationals to finish the season 31-11. On Thursday Morrison lost 3-1 to the fifth seed, Jerry Rinaldi of Cornell. In the consolations Morrison defeated Sam Wendland of Wyoming 3-2. Senior 157 Nate Galloway (State College, Pa.) lost by fall (9:44) in double overtime sudden victory to the 12th seed, Matt Hill of Edinboro in the consolations Friday morning. Galloway pinned Jacob Murphy of Purdue in 1:11 in the first round, before losing 5-2 to the second seed, Brian Stith of Arizona State. Galloway went 1-2 at Nationals and finished the season 11-6. Sophomore 174 Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape) lost 7-4 to the ninth seed, Matthew Palmer of Columbia. In the consolations, Umbehauer lost 9-4 to the eighth seed, Matthew Stolpinski of Navy. Umbehauer finished the season with a record of 28-12. Sophomore 149 Mike Kessler (Randallstown, Md./Owings Mills) lost 6-1 to the fourth seed, Jordan Leen of Cornell in the first round. In the consolations Kessler lost 8-0 to Jake Patacsil of Purdue. Kessler finished the season 21-13. Freshman 184 Mike Miller (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) lost 17-2 in the first round to the tenth seed, Louis Caputo of Harvard. In the consolations, Miller lost 11-3 to Marc Bennett of Indiana. Miller finished his rookie season 24-15. At the CAA Championships sophomore 174 Doug Umbehauer finished first at 174, junior 141 Don Fisch, sophomore 149 Mike Kessler and freshman 184 Mike Miller all placed second to earn automatic berths in the national tournament.  Senior 157 Nate Galloway and junior 197 T.J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) placed third, and now all six are heading to Nationals.

Baseball

The Rider University baseball team has to date played the seventh toughest schedule in Division I, according to boydsworld.com. Against Gonzaga in the final game of the six game road trip the Zags scored five unearned runs in the eighth inning on four hits, a walk and three Rider errors to take a 9-4 lead. For Rider in the top of the eighth inning sophomore Mo Williams (Tinton Falls/Monmouth Regional) walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by junior David Hayes (Sunrise, Fla) to tie the score at 4-4. That was the second hit of the game for David Hayes. Gonzaga tied the score at 3-3 in the seventh inning on a two-out walk followed by a double, and took a 4-3 lead heading into the eighth inning. The Broncs took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when senior Jeff Reynolds (Denville/Parsippany Hills) doubled, freshman Eric Woodrow (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) singled, and both scored on a ground ball out and an error. Reynolds also had a bunt single in the game Sophomore Mike Petrowski (Hamilton Square/Steinert), making his first collegiate start, allowed just three hits in eight innings to defeat Washington State. Junior Jon Leise (Woodbury/West Deptford) hit a two run home run in the seventh inning to give the Broncs a 4-0 lead. Leise also singled in the third inning. Sophomore Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) doubled in the sixth inning, scoring senior Brad States (Paoli, PA/Conestoga), who had doubled, and Hayes scored on a ground out by senior Jeff Reynolds (Denville/Parsippany Hills) to give Rider a 2-0 lead. States also doubled in the seventh. Rider freshman Matt McCollum (Tabernacle/Shawnee) had two of Rider’s nine hits and stole a base for the Broncs. At VMI junior David Hayes (Sunrise, Fla) homered in the second inning of the third game to give Rider a 1-0 lead, and also had a stolen base.  Mike Petrowski pitched three and two thirds innings of shutout relief, striking out five while allowing just one hit.  Brad States had two of Rider’s four hits. In the second game of the series sophomore Adam Tussey (Brooklawn/Gloucester) hit a two-run single in the eighth inning and also tripled. In the first game Jeff Reynolds and junior David Hayes (Sunrise, Fla) each had two of Rider’s seven hits. The Broncs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jamie Hayes led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a ground ball out.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Brunner was named Pitcher of the Week and freshman third baseman Candice Harris was named Rookie of the Week by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for games played March 12-18. Brunner (Chino, Calif./Chino), a right-hander, went 2-2 this past week, posting consecutive complete game wins over Butler and Central Connecticut State.  Against Butler, Brunner tossed a four-hitter and vs. CCSU, had a three-hit shutout as Rider won 1-0 in the seventh inning. Harris (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) batted .400 for the week with three runs scored and three RBI.  Against Vermont at the Rebel Spring Games, Harris went three for three with a double and two RBI. Junior Tiffany Day-Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif./Oaks Christian) became the 39th Bronc with 100 career hits and sophomore Laci Landrum spun a two-hitter as Rider split two games Monday at the Rebel Spring Games, as Rider defeated GW before losing to Cleveland State. Against GW Landrum (Grand Praire, Texas/So. Grand Praire) threw a complete game, recording four strikeouts as the Broncs posted a 6-1 win over the Colonials. Day-Neutill and freshman Derrin Minunni (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) each had three hits with Minunni and freshman Megan Kozlowski (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock-North) each adding a double.  Minunni had three RBI’s with senior Ashley Boulden (Brooklawn, N.J./Gloucester) and sophomore Katy Mills (Seattle, Wash./Mount Rainier) each adding two hits as part of the 13 hit offensive attack by the Broncs.  Boulden also added two RBI’s in the game. Against FDU Rider sophomore Katy Mills (Seattle, Wash./Mount Rainier) had two hits, including a three-run triple with senior Ashley Boulden (Brooklawn, N.J./Gloucester) adding two singles.

The Broncs competed at the third annual Lonnie Barton Memorial tournament Monday and Tuesday. Rider shot a 325 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 662 after a 337 on Monday to place 11th. Sophomore Eric LeFante (Colts Neck) shot a team-best 148 (76/72) to tie for fourth overall among the 60 golfers. Freshman Kevin Krecicki (Hamilton/Nottingham) played as an individual and shot a 162 (80/82), but his score did not count in the Rider team score. Freshman Bradley Yocum (Brodheadville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) had a 169 (83/86) to place 46th overall. Senior Matt Ringen (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) shot a 172 (88/84) Senior Jeff Palmer (Bensalem, PA) shot a 173 (90/83). Rider junior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, PA/Benton), Rider’s top golfer in the fall, was forced to withdraw due to a sprained ankle suffered last week.

Senior Jazmine Fenlator earned All-East honors in the weight throw with a sixth place finishing distance of  53’8.50” and also picked up All-East honors in the shot put with a sixth place finish. Sophomore Kelly Kajunski (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) was fifth in the high jump with a Rider record effort of 5’8.75” to earn All-East honors. Sophomore Desmond Hamilton (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) received All-East honors with a second place finish in the long jump (7.21m) and senior David Payne (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) earned All-East honors with a fifth place finish in the 200m (21.418).

At the NCAA Zone Diving Meet, sophomore Amanda Burke (Churchville, Pa./William Tennett) finished eighth in the finals of the women’s one-meter (487.25) with junior Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) placing 15th in the men’s three-meter (511.20) and senior Shannen Kahler (Ojai, Calif./Chaparral/Grossmont CC) placing 29th in the women’s one-meter preliminaries (183.75).

The season came to an end with a first round loss to Saint Peter’s at the MAAC Tournament. Freshman Ashley Anderson (East Orange) scored a career-high 15 points and added four rebounds. Sophomore Shaunice Parker (Waldorf, Md./West Lake) compiled 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Maura Gillooly (Fanwood/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) added eight points in 17 minutes off the bench and junior Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) added seven points and three rebounds.
