SPOKANE, WA—The Broncs lost at Gonzaga Friday. “We got out-played in every phase of the game,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
The Zags (13-10) broke the game open in the fourth inning with six runs on five hits, including a three-run home run, taking an 11-0 lead. “They swing the bats,” Davis said. “They are probably the best offensive team we’ve seen this year.”
For the Broncs (2-9) sophomore Sean Olson (Vineland/St. Augustine Prep) hit an RBI single, his second hit of the game, to get Rider on the board in the sixth inning, scoring sophomore Adam Tussey (Brooklawn/Gloucester), who had singled. Senior Jeff Reynolds (Denville/Parsippany Hills) also hit an RBI single in the sixth.
Rider freshman Darron Lattomus (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) collected his first collegiate hit and knocked in a run on a ground out. “He had a nice bunt single, and played solid defense in left for us,” Davis said.
Rider senior Brad States (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) also singled.
Gonzaga scored a run in the first inning on two hits, added two more in the second on a two-run home run, and added two more runs on three hits in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. “We keep getting behind early,” Davis said. “We have to learn how to prevent that. That is a tough way to play.”
The Broncs play the third game of the three-game series Saturday. “I still feel good about our team,” Davis said. “We just need to play better tomorrow. We have one more crack at them.”
