Rider’s Minunni MAAC Rookie of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE—Rider University freshman catcher/outfielder Derrin Minunni (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) got her career off on the right foot by being named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for all games played the first week of the 2007 season.  “I was looking for her to be someone that would surprise people in the conference,” said head coach Tricia Carroll.  “With her being honored by the conference, the cat is probably out of the bag.”

Minunni batted .333 in her first five games for Rider (1-4) scoring twice with two RBI.

“Derrin gets the job done both at catcher and in the outfield,” said Carroll who is in her 13th season at Rider.  “She has a strong arm and works really hard and the fact that she is a catcher and outfielder gives us some flexibility at both positions.”

Minunni went three for four with two runs scored and an RBI in an 8-5 win over Big East opponent Georgetown at the Elon Invitational in Burlington, North Carolina.

“She got more comfortable as the weekend went on,” Carroll added.

The softball team is scheduled to travel to Drexel on March 7 and the Broncs open the home campaign with the Rider Invitational against Villanova, Monmouth and Lafayette the weekend of March 24-25.
