BURLINGTON, N.C.—The Broncs were swept on the final day of the Elon Invitational losing three games on Saturday. “I am glad we got the games in for the tournament,” said head coach Tricia Carroll. “But I wish we were a little more competitive.”
For Rider (1-4) in the first game, junior outfielder Tiffany Day-Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif./Oaks Christian) tripled in freshman Megan Kozlowski (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock-North) who had doubled for the only Bronc run of the game in the third inning.
Sophomore Lauren Brunner (Chino, Calif./Chino) pitched a complete game, scattering 11 hits, recording two strikeouts.
“Lauren [Brunner] pitched well, better than she did yesterday,” Carroll added. “But in order for her to be successful, we are going to have to make all of the plays behind her and we didn’t really do that over the weekend.”
In the second game, junior Jessica Holland (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) gave up nine earned runs as the Broncs fell in five innings and in the nightcap, freshman Laura Magliozzi (Granger, Ind./John Adams) went the first four innings as the Broncs were shutout by Ohio 8-0.
“Candice Harris did a great job for us at third base,” said Carroll. She came in as a middle infielder and switched positions for us and as a rookie, she has just jumped right in. She is willing to do whatever we need for the team and she has started off doing a great job.”
“You want the players to get better each day,” Carroll added. “And playing strong competition early gives them some frame of reference and some focus on what we have to do but with that said, we still need to play better and compete. I felt that we were a step slow on some plays today and thinking about what we were going to do instead of just reacting and playing the game.”
Rider travels to Drexel for a non-conference doubleheader March 7.
