LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs won nine of 10 bouts to defeat Boston University in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet Friday night. Four of the Rider winners were freshmen.  “I like to see that,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.  “The freshmen win and get encouraged. That hasn’t happened that many times this year that almost all of the freshmen in the line up all won.”

For Rider (10-7, 4-2 CAA) freshman 184 Mike Miller (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine), freshman 125 Tom Lorenzo (West Orange), freshman 157 Nick Weaver (Bayville/Central Regional) and freshman 165 Robbie Morrison (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff) all won their bouts.  “Weaver did a nice job in his first home match,” Taylor said. “The kid he beat is actually very good.”

Senior Nick Ciufo (Pt. Pleasant Boro) won at heavyweight. “Nick wrestles very hard and he’s getting better,” Taylor said. Ciufo weights in a 213 and usually has to compete against wrestlers larger than him. “His hard work paid off for him tonight because his opponent was his size (214),” Taylor said.  “Most heavyweights he faces he is giving up a lot of weight to, but he wrestles hard the whole time. I was very pleased that he got somebody his own size tonight, where you can see he can compete with wrestlers his own size.”

“This was a good match,” Ciufo said, “We looked good tonight all the way through the line up. I felt a lot better after the match. I’ve been sick the last couple of days with the flu, out of practice a little bit, so it felt real good to get a win.”

Junior T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff), ranked 14th in the nation, won by tech fall for his 25th win of the season to give Rider a 5-0 lead.

Sophomore Mike Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills) used a takedown with two seconds left for a victory at 149, giving the Broncs a 17-3 lead.

Sophomore Doug Umbehauer (Shamong/Lenape), ranked eighth in the nation and junior 141 Don Fisch (Williamstown/Delsea) also won for the Broncs.

Boston U. (8-9, 4-5 CAA) won its only match at 133 pounds.

The Sacred Heart match is the final dual meet before the CAA Championships March 2-3. “We have one more dual meet that we have to wrestle hard in, and once that is over our training will begin to change,” Taylor said. “We will go into a different mode, to try to peak at the right time, at the two upcoming tournaments, the CAAs and the Nationals.”

“That will be my last match in Alumni Gym, so I’ll be trying hard to go out on a win,” Ciufo said. “It’s been a great four years here at Rider.”
