Rider’s Thompsons Honored by MAAC

LAWRENCEVILLE—Junior Jason Thompson and freshman Ryan Thompson of the Rider University basketball team were honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Jason as Co-Player of the Week and Ryan as Co-Rookie of the Week for all games played February 5-11. “I was happy to see both Jason and Ryan be honored by the MAAC for their play last week,” said Rider head coach Tommy Dempsey.

A 6’10” forward, Jason (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) averaged 23.3 points and 11.7 rebounds over three games last week, and compiled seven assists, six blocks and three steals.

Ryan (Mt. Laurel/Lenape), a 6’5” guard, averaged 12.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists over the last three games. Ryan compiled his first collegiate ‘double-double’ in the victory over Canisius, collecting a career-high 12 rebounds and a career-high six assists.

“Jason was really dominant at both ends of the court last week and Ryan is starting to play with tremendous confidence,” Dempsey said. “It should be an exciting next month.”

In Rider’s victory over Manhattan, Jason tied a Rider single game record with 20 rebounds. His ‘double-double’ in the win over Canisius was his 14th of the season and the 27th of his career.

Last week Rider won two games and lost the third game by one point to the first place team, Marist. “As a team we played very good basketball and when your team plays well you have a chance for some of your players to get recognized,” Dempsey said.

Jason leads the conference in rebounding (10.0) and is currently second in the MAAC in scoring (20.0) and is the only MAAC player to rank among the top four in both categories. Nationally, Jason ranks ninth in rebounding, 21st in scoring and 26th in blocks.

Jason was named the co-winner of the MAAC Player of the Week award January 22-28, and won the award for games played November 27-December 3.

Rider plays at Loyola Wednesday before hosting Murray State in the O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBuster game Saturday evening at 7:00 pm.
