NEW YROK, NY—The Broncs co-hosted the Lafayette/Rider Winter Games at the 168th Street Armory Friday night. “It went really well,” said head coach Rob Pasquariello. It’s always a little bit of a weird meet in the respect that the conference championships are next week so they are trying their best to succeed but also trying not to get hurt in the process.”
The men’s 4 x 800 relay of Matt Dahl, Ryan Donohue, Andre Fearon and Jeff Stead won in 7:53.89 and senior David Payne (Neptune) won the 60m dash (6.93) and was third in the 200 (21.94).
“We did what we came up here to do,” Pasquariello said. “We got a ton of personal records (PR’s), especially from the younger kids and we are ready to roll into the conference.”
Junior Randy Nixon (Manorville, NY/West Hampton) was second in the 60m hurdles (8.23) and tenth in the 60m dash (7.16). Senior Doug Beck (Branchburg/Somerville) was third in the weight throw (16.21m) and 10th in the shot put (14.32m).
“It’s a balancing act and learning experience for the athletes and the coaches every year,” Pasquariello added. “Because we have so many different events and the training is different, getting everyone on the same page from the freshman to the seniors takes quite an effort. It’s really the art of coaching track and field getting the athletes to peak at the right time.”
For the Rider women, senior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne/Wayne Valley) was second in the weight throw (15.50m), senior Danielle Holmes (Hackensack/Holy Angels) was second in the triple jump (11.07m), freshman Alicia Price (Voorhees/Eastern) was second in the shot put (12.99m) and seventh in the weight throw (12.38m), and freshman Jessica Tack (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) was third in the shot put (12.88m).
“One of the challenges is that what may work for someone like Jazmine [Fenlator] may not work right away for one of the freshman throwers,” said Pasquariello. “They do watch each other and try different techniques and see what works for them as they mature. The upperclassmen have been very good in showing the younger members of the team what to do off the track, in the training room, in the classroom, eating habits, getting enough sleep, things we can’t control 24-7 and that I think has been the key to our success this year and will help us a lot next week at MAAC’s.”
Sophomore Desmond Hamilton (Pennsauken) was fourth in the triple jump (13.81m) and fifth in the 200m (22.24).Junior Paul Matuszak (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was fourth in the 3,000m (8:46.77), freshman Kevin Breen (Langhorne, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was fourth in the pole vault (4.50m) and sophomore Tom Planer (Cranford) was fourth in the high jump (1.86m). Sophomore AJ Parillo (South River) was fourth in the long jump (6.77m) and 14th in the 200m (22.76).
Freshman Kelsey Kohler (Southampton, PA/St. Basil’s) placed fourth in the women’s 3,000m (10:38.63), and sophomore Tabatha Haskins (Medford/Shawnee) placed fourth in the long jump (5.44m) and sixth in the 60m hurdles (9.33).
Senior Allyson Angelo (Brick/Red Bank Catholic) placed sixth in the pole vault (3.15m), junior Rebecca Clatch (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area) was seventh in the pole vault (3.00m), senior Katie O’Connor (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) placed seventh in the 60m hurdles (9.34) and sophomore Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven/Rumson Fair Haven) placed eighth in the mile (5:24.02).
Sophomore Matt Dahl (West Keansburg/Raritan) placed seventh in the 1,000m (2:32.78), senior Danny Enck (Lititz, PA/Warwick) was seventh in the shot put (14.63m), junior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach/Matawan) was seventh in the mile (4:22.81) and junior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) was eighth in the 800m (1:56.98). Freshman Paul Racioppi (Old Bridge) was 14th in the 400m (52.05).
Sophomore Kelly Kajunski (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) placed 10th in the 60m hurdles (9.51) and 12th in the long jump (5.02m), freshman Karlise Cureton (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) placed 12th in the 200m (26.55), freshman Lauren Lester (Schenectady, NY/Mohanosen) was 14th in the 800m (2:24.74), sophomore Tricia Crotty (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) was 18th in the 400m (1:01.48) and 19th in the 60m dash (8.35), senior Laura Carpenter (Englishtown/St. John Vianney) placed 20th in the 3,000m (11:27.38).
“We are as healthy as we have ever been heading into the conference championships,” Pasquariello added. “No one is 100 percent this time of year but we are close and I am very confident where we are at and very comfortable with where we are both physically and mentally going into the meet.”
Rider returns to the Armory next Friday for the MAAC Championships February 16.
