AMES, IOWA—The Broncs took on the third ranked team in the nation Friday night, falling in a non-conference dual. “We got an opportunity to wrestle the very best in the nation,” said head coach Gary Taylor. “They may be as good as anybody in the nation right now.”
For Rider junior 141 Don Fisch (Williamstown/Delsea) won in an injury default over 10th ranked Mitch Mueller.
“Your kids get a chance to compete against the best in the country,” Taylor added. “That doesn’t often happen at a small school so tonight was a great opportunity.”
Sophomore Doug Umbehauer (Shamong/Lenape), ranked eighth in the nation, lost a 6-5 decision to senior Grant Turner.
“Some of the matches were really close,” Taylor said. “They could have gone either way and that’s critical that we were able to compete because you can’t simulate this type of competition. This gave us a great opportunity to see where we stand, in front of 3,000 fans and on the road, in a charged environment. Nationals are going to be very much like tonight was and our wrestlers now have a better feel of the things that they need to do to get to this level. If you go to nationals without ever having experienced this, you are going to be overwhelmed. Our schedule and this competition gives our wrestlers a chance to avoid that.”
Bronc junior 197 T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff), ranked 14th in the nation at 174, fell by a score of 8-3 to Kurt Backes who is ranked fifth in the nation.
“I thought we were competitive in about half of the matches,” Taylor said. “And in the other half, Iowa State was just a dominate team.”
Rider travels to Hofstra on Tuesday night for a Colonial Athletic Association dual.
“Hofstra is a great rival and we’ll be there and ready Tuesday night,” Taylor said.
