Rider at 2007 MAAC Championships-Day Two
Broncs Men & Women 2nd
BALTIMORE, MD—There’s water in the pool and the stars are aligned. And what’s going to happen on Saturday is anyone’s guess. And that’s the way Rider likes it. Both the Rider men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams are in second place after day two of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships hosted by Loyola College. Competition continues through Saturday. “I thought the meet went well,” said head coach Steve Fletcher. “We’re a small team and considering that, it went well today. We’re right in the thick of the championship and anything can happen on the last day.”
For the men’s team, senior Brandon Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) set a new MAAC record in the 100 breast, winning with a time of 56:29. Sophomore Josh Rosenbluth (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) won the 100 back (50.43) with junior Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) winning the 3-meter dive (478.80).
“Brandon didn’t expect to go that fast in the morning swim,” said Fletcher. “He did well and then came back and set the conference and Rider school record which is exciting. His 200’s are fast and I think he’ll be ready to do it again tomorrow and with Dylan winning the diving and Chris [Coles] finishing second and Paul [Apostolakis] placing eighth, we placed three divers in the top eight which is huge for the team scoring. Each diver tries to out do the other, it’s very competitive and they push each other to new heights.”
For the women’s team, sophomore Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) won the 400 IM (4:33.19) and was second in the 200 free (1:54.99) with freshman Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township) winning the 100 back (57.85) setting a new MAAC and team record. “Kellyanne has been able to a lot of potential,” Fletcher said. “She has a lot of nervous energy being a freshman in a big meet and with her speed, if she can harness that energy, her potential will be unlimited.”
The men’s 200 medley relay of junior Peter Starr (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area Senior), Modrov, Rosenbluth and freshman Scott Player (Chino Hills, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala) won with a time of 1:34.48. Player also placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (52.28).
Also for the men’s team, senior Andy French (Richfield, MN) placed second in the 400 IM (4:04.69) and graduate student Chris Coles (Plainsboro/West Windsor Plainsboro North) placed second in the 3-meter dive (459.20). Coles has twice won the MAAC 3-meter and was twice (2004, 2005) the MAAC Most Outstanding Diver.
The men’s 800 free relay of French, freshman Brian Brady (Turnersville, N.J./Gloucester Catholic), Rosenbluth and Modrov placed third with a time of 7:00.52. Brady also placed 12th in the 200 free (1:46.00).
Also for the women’s team, senior Lauren Urbanski (Lansdowne, Pa./Upper Darby) was second in the 100 butterfly (57.45) with the 200 medley relay of Tomasula, Urbanski, Modrov and junior Stephanie Cosentino (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) placing second with a time of 1:47.49. The 800 free relay of Urbanski, Cosentino, senior Courtney Clark (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Modrov also placed second with a time of 7:53.82. Clark was seventh in the 1000 free (10:45.92). Cosentino also placed fourth in the 200 free (1:56.91).
Senior Adrianne Glasgow (Davidsonville, Md./Saint Mary's) was fourth in the 1000 free (4:43.73) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.43) with senior Ryan Mitten (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) placing fourth in the 100 butterfly (59.07) and sophomore Erica Kriedel (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) placing fourth in the 100 breast (1:00.83).
Junior Matt Bauer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was third in the 100 breast (59.48), junior Peter Starr (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area Senior) was third in the 100 back (52.33), sophomore Drew Palmieri (Hanover, Mass./Boston Coll. HS/Mercersburg Acad.) was fourth in the 400 IM (4:11.21) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (54.41), freshman Alex Grubbs (York, Pa./York Suburban) was fifth in the 1000 free (10:00.98), sophomore Bryan Mejia (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch ) was seventh in the 100 back (54.85) and freshman Paul Apostolakis was eighth in the three-meter dive (314.95).
Senior Hayley Wittsack (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) was fifth in the 400 IM (4:45.28) and 13th in the 1000 free (11:02.77), freshman Lovette Leonhard (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) was sixth in the 1000 free (10:43.98), sophomore Kristen Warwick (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) was 13th in the 400 IM (4:53.74) and junior Rebecca Sanbower (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) placed 15th in the 1000 free (11:03.99).
“With the parity in the meet, if we are able to swim our top efforts, anything can happen on the last day,” Fletcher added. “The standings are that tight and it just shows how competitive the conference is. Marist is still the team to beat and we are right behind them and Loyola and Iona are right behind us so Sunday should be very exciting for the swimmers. It’s a great meet and every place counts and our goal is to swim and dive our best and be right there at the end.”
Anything can happen when there’s water in the pool and events still to be swam.
