Rider Men 1st, Women 2nd at 2007 MAAC Championships-Day One
BALTIMORE, Md.--The Rider men are in first place and the Rider women are in second place after the first day of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Loyola College. Competition continues through Saturday. “We had a really good afternoon in the preliminaries, then got off to a rocky start in the finals,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher, “but as the meet went on we picked up momentum and finished the day strong.”
For the Rider men, senior Brandon Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) won the 200 individual medley in a Rider record time of 1:51.20. Modrov won the MAAC 200 IM last year in a Bronc record time of 1:52.01 on his way to earning the 2006 MAAC Most Outstanding Swimmer trophy. “Brandon was on fire tonight,” Fletcher said. “The 200 IM was a personal record for him, as well as a Rider record and very close to the MAAC record,” Fletcher said.
For the Rider women, freshman Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township) won the 50 free (24.38) and sophomore Amanda Burke (Churchville, Pa./William Tennent) won the 1-meter dive in her first MAAC Championship competition with a MAAC record score of 260.40. “Amanda obviously dove well in her first MAAC Championship,” Fletcher said. “Kellyanne is very close to the Rider record in the 50,” Fletcher said. “Winning that event and anchoring the winning relay is where she wants to be.”
Sophomore Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:08.94) and senior Lauren Urbanski (Lansdowne, Pa./Upper Darby) placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:09.97). Modrov won the 200 IM last year in a MAAC record time of 2:05.92 on her way to earning the 2006 MAAC Most Outstanding Swimmer award and Urbanski was third in the 200 IM at the 2006 MAACs.
The women’s 200 free relay team of Modrov, Urbanski, Cosentino and Tomasula won in 1:37.90, while the women's 400 medley relay team of sophomore Ericka Kriedel (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield), Urbanski, senior Ryan Mitten (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Twp.) and Tomasula placed second (3:59.87).
Senior Andy French (Richfield, Minn.) placed second in the 500 free (4:40.51). French placed second in the 500 free in 2006.
Sophomore Josh Rosenbluth (Lawrenceville/Lawrence) placed second in the 200 individual medley (1:52.12). Rosenbluth was third in the 200 IM last year.
Freshman Scott Player (Chino Hills, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala) placed fourth in the 50 free (21.65) and freshman Brian Brady (Turnersville/Gloucester Catholic) was sixth in the 500 free (4:45.65).
The men's 400 medley relay team of Rosenbluth, Modrov, Player and Brady won in 3:25.33, and the 200 free relay team of Starr, Player, Brady and sophomore Bryan Mejia (Long Branch) placed fourth.
Junior Stephanie Cosentino (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) placed fifth in the 50 free (24.88). Cosentino placed second in the 50 free at the 2005 MAACs as a freshman.
Freshman Lovette Leonhard (Piscataway) placed sixth in the 500 free (5:14.27), senior Shannen Kahler (Ojai, Calif.) placed sixth in the 1-meter dive and senior Courtney Clark (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) placed seventh in the 500 free (5:18.71). Clark won the 500 free last season for the second year in a row, one of four gold medals she won in 2006.
Sophomore Ericka Kriedel (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) placed 15th in the 50 free (25.88).
Junior Matt Bauer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was sixth in the 200 individual medley (1:57.21). Bauer placed seventh in the MAAC 200 IM in 2006. Junior Peter Starr (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area Senior) placed seventh in the 50 free (22.04). Starr was fifth in the 50 free at the MAACs last year.
