Rider at New Balance Collegiate Invitational
NEW YORK, NY—The Broncs competed in the seventh annual New Balance Invitational this weekend at the New York City Armory. “The women’s team came out with a really good focus and competed well,” said head coach Rob Pasquariello. “I was a little disappointed on the men’s side in their preparation and focus. We competed well the past few weeks but this weekend, except for the distance medley relay that set a school record, the men didn’t fire on all cylinders and didn’t look ready to go and as coaches, we need to go back to what we were doing and prepare them better.”
For the women’s team, senior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne/Wayne Valley) was seventh in the weight throw (57’00.25”) with sophomore Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven) running a personal best time of 10:38.44 in the 3000m, finishing 22nd.
“Kelly ran well in the 5k,” Pasquariello added. “But, Jazmine was again the highlight today. There were only three women who made the finals in both the shot put and weight throw and Jazmine was one of them, along with two All-Americans so she put herself in some impressive company with her effort this weekend. Last year, Jazmine was a little thrown off by some of the competition that was around her and the surroundings that she was competing in but this year, Jaz has stepped up and shown a greater level of maturity and just relaxes and competes and her performances have shown that. She is really focused on competing to her ability and not trying to do too much.”
“I was also happy with the 4x400 team as well as the effort from sophomore Tabatha Haskins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) who jumped well against some very strong competition,” Pasquariello added.
Haskins finished 26th in the triple jump with the 4x400 team of senior Katie Chin (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), sophomore Tricia Crotty (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley), freshman Karlise Cureton (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.) and sophomore Ashley Maynard placing 20th with a time of 4:07.75.
For the men’s team, senior David Payne (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) was 15th in the 200m (22:00) and 25th in the 60m (6.94) with junior Andre Fearon (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) placing 35th in the mile (4:20.77).
Junior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) was 43rd in the mile (4:24.35) with junior Randy Nixon (Manorville, N.Y./West Hampton) placing 89th in the 200m (23.56).
“I think that on the men’s side we were looking ahead on the schedule,” Pasquariello added. “We have the conference championships in two weeks and you work to try and peak at the right time. With that said, you still have to go out and compete and I just don’t think we did a very good job of that on the men’s side. And I think with some better preparation, we can get back on track for the MAAC’s.”
The Broncs co-host the Rider/Lafayette Winter Games at the 168th Street Armory in New York on Friday, February 9 before returning to the Armory for the conference championships on February 16.
