FAIRFIELD, Conn--The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Farifield Sunday afternoon. “We need to foul less and take care of the ball more,” said head coach Tori Harrison.
For Rider (1-18, 0-8 MAAC), senior Kara Borel (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) had 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals with sophomore Danielle Costantino (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) adding 13 points and four rebounds.
“Kara [Borel] is doing what we’ve asked her to do and that’s play a more complete game,” said Harrison. “She can do so many things, pass, score, play strong defense and for us to stay in games, we need her to do a little of everything. As a senior, we all want for her to go out on a positive note.”
The Broncs came out with a strong pressure defense to start the second half, holding the Stags to one for eight shooting in the first five minutes and cut the Stag lead to nine with 9:36 left at 53-44 but could get no closer. Despite that opening stretch in the second half, the Stags shot 60 percent for the game.
“Danielle [Costantino] played well,” Harrison added. “We need her to turn the ball over a little less but she shot the ball very well and she is stepping her game up.”
With the Stags up 12-9, Fairfield (9-10, 5-3 MAAC) went on an 8-2 run and led 20-11 with 12 minutes left in the first half. Leading 30-22, Fairfield went on a 7-0 run, opening up a 37-22 lead with four minutes left in the first half and held a 46-31 advantage at half time.
Freshman Ashley Anderson (East Orange, N.J./East Orange) added 10 points and six rebounds for Rider.
The teams combined for 60 turnovers with Fairfield committing 29 on the day. “Our defense stepped up and we caused 29 turnovers,” said Harrison. “But we turned it over 31 times and you can’t do that and expect to win the game.”
The Broncs have lost eight straight.
Fairfield was led by junior Sabra Wrice (Riverside, N.J./Riverside) who scored 16 points.
Rider returns to action on Saturday, January 27, at 1:00pm against Saint Peter’s in a MAAC game at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey.
