FAIRFAX, VA—The Broncs split their two Colonial Athletic Association dual meets Saturday to go 3-1 at the CAA Duals, hosted by George Mason. “We’re coming home with a 3-1 record in the tournament,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “We wanted to get all four, but Old Dominion just wrestled a little better than us today.”
Junior 141 Don Fisch (Williamstown/Delsea) and freshman 184 Mike Miller (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) both went 4-0 in the CAA Duals for Rider. “Those two were very consistent for us this weekend,” Taylor said.
Against Binghamton, Fisch recorded a pin to give Rider a 9-6 lead that the Broncs never relinquished. Binghamton closed to 16-15 when Rider sophomore Doug Umbehauer (Shamong/Lenape), ranked ninth in the nation, was upset by Josh Patterson. “That kid (Patterson) was a high school national champ and Doug just let one get away from him,” Taylor said.
Following Umbehauer’s loss, Miller won to give Rider a 19-15 lead, and junior T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff), ranked 13th in the nation, won by pin to put the match away. “That decided the match so we didn’t even wrestle heavyweight,” Taylor added.
The loss to ODU was the second for Rider this season. “Old Dominion has a good, balanced team,” Taylor said. Sophomore Mike Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills), who won twice on Friday, and Morrison were upset against Old Dominion. Morrison was beat by the 20th ranked wrestler in the nation, David Mendoza, 5-3. “TJ and the kid from ODU are 1-1 this year. He’s pretty good. Kessler had beaten the kid from Old Dominion earlier this year, and came back from that loss today to wrestle hard against a very tough kid from Binghamton,” Taylor said.
The good news is the fact that Rider (7-6, 3-2 CAA) is coming home with three conference wins. The bad news is Rider is also coming home with some injuries.
“We got banged up pretty good in this tournament, injury-wise,” Taylor said. “We’ve been in much tougher battles that we came out of healthier, but this particular tournament we got hurt pretty bad, with a concussion, with a high ankle sprain, a dislocated patellar, an inter-costal (rib injury).”
Rider competes at Rutgers January 31. “All we can do is keep working and getting after it,” Taylor said. “I think this weekend will give some of the guys added incentive for the CAA tournament. That is what we have to focus on now.”
