HAMPTON, VA--The Broncs placed sixth of 16 teams at the Virginia Duals this weekend, losing twice on Saturday. “We had a good day on Friday and a tough day on Saturday,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “This will make us tougher.”

After defeating VMI and Arizona State on Friday, the Broncs lost to 10th ranked Penn State, the tournament's top seed, in the semi-finals Saturday afternoon, before losing to CAA-foe Old Dominion in the consolation rounds Saturday evening. “It was a humbling experience against Penn State, but I think we can learn from the intensity they had in their match and we can go from there,” Taylor said.

“Penn State is just better than we are,” Taylor said.  “Against ODU we couldn’t wrestle Dave Miller due to an injury, and that pretty much cost us the match. We had to put a freshman in at 157 and move another freshman up to 165 and we lost both.”

Junior T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff), ranked 13th in the nation, won to give Rider a brief 18-16 lead over ODU.

Sophomore Doug Umbehauer (Shamong/Lenape), ranked ninth in the nation, lost 3-2 to the third ranked wrestler in the nation from Penn State, before winning by pin against Old Dominion. “Doug always wrestles well and did again today,” Taylor said. “Despite losing he wrestled well against a very good kid from Penn State.”

Junior 141 Don Fisch (Williamstown/Delsea), sophomore Mike Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills) and freshman Mike Miller (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) also won their matches for Rider against ODU.
