Bob Whartenby of Lawrenceville was named the new head coach of the Rider University golf team in the Fall of 2006.
Whartenby is a 2004 graduate of Rider, where he was a three-time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference golfer for the Broncs, and is thought by many as the finest golfer in the modern era of the sport at Rider.
“Bob Whartenby will do a great job as Rider’s Golf Coach,” said Director of Athletics Don Harnum. “He obviously knows the game and is very well connected in local and regional golf circles.”
Whartenby replaces 2006 MAAC Golf Coach of the Year Chet Dalgewicz, who retired after 12 years as Rider’s golf coach and Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Academic Support.
Whartenby served two years as an assistant coach under Dalgewicz.
“I know that as a former Rider golfer he has a tremendous amount of pride in the Rider golf program,” said Harnum.
A three-time team captain, Whartenby was the recipient of the Ed Eget Scholarship for outstanding achievement in both academics and athletics, and served as Vice President for Rider’s Student Athlete Advisory Council.
As a senior Whartenby led Rider to a best-ever ranking of 10th in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the fall of 2003, and in the spring of 2004 led Rider to a fifth place finish in the MAAC Championships when he placed fifth overall among the 45 golfers. As a junior Whartenby led Rider to a fourth place finish at the MAAC Championships, and as a sophomore he also led Rider to a fourth place MAAC finish.
