Rider’s Thompson Honored by MAAC

LAWRENCEVILLE—Jason Thompson, a junior on the Rider University basketball team, was named the co-winner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week award for all games played November 27-December 3. “Jason is off to a great start,” said Rider head coach Tommy Dempsey. “I can’t remember a player having a better week.”

Thompson (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) averaged 25.3 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 2.3 assists over three games last week, leading the Broncs to a 2-1 week. “Jason was dominating all week,” Dempsey said.

In Rider’s win at Binghamton, Thompson scored nine points in Rider’s 9-1 run that tied the score at 54-54 with 7:24 left to play, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds. He scored a career-high 29 points against Monmouth, and made a career-high 14 of 17 foul shots in a win over Drexel.

“If we’re going to be a great team we need Jason to continue to play at this high level,” Dempsey said.

For the season Thompson is now averaging a ‘double-double’ with 21.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Thompson leads the MAAC in blocks and defensive rebounds, is second in the MAAC in overall rebounding and is third in the conference in scoring.

Thompson is a preseason All-MAAC selection this year.

Rider (5-2) hosts Iona in the first MAAC game of the season Thursday.
