Rider Athletics Helping Feed the Hungry During Thanksgiving

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rider Athletics Donates 14 Baskets of Food
for Thanksgiving Food Drive

LAWRENCEVILLE--As part of the MAAC Gives Back and The Rider Athletics Partners in a Caring Community Program, Rider Athletics and eight of the varsity teams assisted the Rider University's Center for Multicultural Affairs and Community Service by donating food during the 2006 annual drive.

The Thanksgiving Basket Drive provides area families in dire need with a Thanksgiving meal, complete with turkey and trimmings.   In past years, the department of athletics has donated two baskets, but this year many of the teams participated and, as a whole, athletics is donating 14 baskets full of food.  In addition to the administrative staff, the teams that donated baskets are: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track & field/cross country, softball and baseball.

"I am extremly pleased that so many of our teams decided to participate in the Thanksgiving basket drive this year," said Karin Torchia, associate director of athletics.  "By working together with The Center for Multicultural Affairs and Community Service at Rider, we're helping to reduce the number of hungry families in Mercer County this Thanksgiving.  At the same time, the realization that there are so many families in the area that are less-fortunate than us will hopefully give our student-athletes a chance to reflect on their own blessings as the holiday season approaches."

In addition to the Thanksgiving Basket Drive, the department of athletics also participated in the Trenton area Feed the Hungry Program on November 18 and is also collecting donations for the Toys for Tots Program.
