Rider’s Smith All-MAAC Honors

ORLANDO, Fla.—Rider senior Megan Smith (Webster, N.Y./Webster) of the volleyball team was awarded second team All-MAAC honors it was announced Thursday at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship Tournament in Orlando, Florida.

“Megan is our second player ever to receive All-MAAC honors,” said head coach Emily Ahlquist.  “She had to work very hard this year to receive this honor and it is well deserved.”

Jaclyn Levi ’05 is the only other Bronc volleyball player to receive All-MAAC honors, having been named first-team All-MAAC at the end of the 2004 season.

Smith, a 6-0 middle hitter, finished the regular season fifth in the conference in kills with 3.76 kills per game and led the Broncs in kills (365), blocks (69) and points (421.5).

In the coaches voting, Smith was one of only two players that received all-conference honors who wasn’t on a team that finished in the top four in the league standings.

“The coaches showed how much they respect my play and the play of Rider overall,” said Smith.  “Only one other team (Saint Peter’s) placed a player on the All-MAAC team that was in the lower half of the league so it is a huge honor for me to be recognized by the coaches in the league.”

Smith was the conference player of the week for all games played October 23-29 and was named the Rider Female Athlete of the Month for October.
