LAWRENCEVILLE—In the 2006-07 home opener, the Broncs picked up their first win of the season, as the Rider women defeated Lehigh. “It was exciting to get a win,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher. “I think they needed that, a morale booster to beat Lehigh. They’re a tough, Patriot League opponent.”
For the Rider women, sophomore Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) set a Rider pool record in the 400 individual medley (4:29.16), won the 500 freestyle (5:12.20) and helped the 200 medley relay set a Rider pool record (1:49.40).
“It was really exciting today,” said Modrov. “This was my best meet of the season so far. I really need this type of meet. I’ve been training with Coach Fletcher all summer so it is really nice to see all that work pay off. I’ve been sick the past few weeks so I’m glad I was able to have some good races today.”
“Priscilla’s performance demonstrates that she is on track to do really well in the US Open (Nov. 30-Dec. 3),” said Fletcher. “She broke her own 400 IM record by three seconds.”
Swimming on the medley relay with Modrov were freshman Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township), senior Lauren Urbanski (Lansdowne, Pa./Upper Darby) and junior Stephanie Cosentino (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy). ““I’m very pleased with the way the team swam,” said Fletcher.
Sophomore Amanda Burke (Churchville, Pa./William Tennent) won the three-meter dive and placed second in the one-meter dive. “The divers were excellent today,” Fletcher said. “The divers put the women in position to win the meet.”
For the Rider men, junior Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) won both the one-meter and the three-meter dives.
Senior Andy French (Richfield, MN) won the 500 free (4:48.47). “I felt pretty good today,” said French. “I was mainly focusing on the 500 today. I’ve trained hard all summer and I’m tapering for next week. There will be good competition there.”
“Andy is peaking for next weekend, so his 500 freestyle today was an excellent sign for next weekend and how well he’s going to swim,” Fletcher said. “The men continue to maximize the competitiveness of our group. We have a small team but are performing really well. We have a large class of freshmen and at the end of the year I think we’ll be where we want to be.”
Also for the men, senior Brandon Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) placed second in the 1,000 free (9:58.83), freshman Scott Player (Chino Hills, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala) placed second in the 50 free (22.00) and junior Matt Bauer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) placed second in the 100 breast (1:01.33). For the women, Lauren Urbanski was second in the 200 butterfly (2:08.54).
“Overall, both the men and women’s teams did an outstanding job today and with us getting that first win I think it will really help the morale of the team,” Modrov said.
The Broncs compete at the Bucknell Invitational November 18-19.
