Men's College Cross Country
25th at Mid-Atlantic Regional
LOCK HAVEN, PA—The Rider University cross country season came to an end Saturday at the 2006 NCAA Division I Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Bucknell University at Lock Haven University. “The women did a great job today,” said Rider coach Bob Hamer. “We improved over last year (26th) and we beat a lot of teams. The men struggled today but sometimes that’s what happens.”
For the Rider women, who placed 24th of 28 teams, sophomore Andrea Campbell (Somers Point/Mainland Regional) placed 93rd overall, covering the 6,000 meter course in a time of 22:48.
For the Rider men, junior John Smith (Cliffwood Beach/Matawan) placed 109th among the 178 runners, covering the 10,000 meter course in 33:23.
Freshman Kelsey Kohler (Southampton, PA/St. Basil’s) was 134th of the 195 women runners in 23:34.
Sophomore Kelly Wojciehowski (Fair Haven/Rumson Fair Haven) was 138th in 23:44, sophomore Megan Crowe (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert’s) finished 141st in 23:51, senior Jennifer Lee (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) was 175th in 25:23 and freshman Dominique Carnevale (Oceanport/shore Regional) was 181st in 26:20.
“The women ran a great race,” said Hamer. “They got out and put themselves in a position to do well. We were back a little further then we would have liked to been at the mile but we kept running hard, kept fighting together, and ran as a nice little pack. We only had about 63 seconds between our first and fourth finisher, which is just about what we’ve been trying to accomplish all season. They really went out there and did a great job.”
Also for the Rider men, sophomore Matt Dahl (West Keansburg/Raritan) was 116th in 33:40, junior Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) was 127th in 33:51, freshman Phil Capaldi (Woxsall, PA/Souderton) was 150th in 34:59, junior Ryan Donohue (Freehold) was 153rd in 35:21 and junior TJ Weston (Toms River North) was 160th in 36:27. “It was a little disappointing,” said Hamer. “We need to get back to the drawing board and continue to work hard and hopefully get better results in the future. It was just a bad day.”
The Regional marks the end of the cross country season. “The women did a great job this season,” said Hamer. “They’ve made some great strides and improved with a very young team. We’re looking forward to growing with that team and making some inroads into the top two or three teams in the MAAC.”
