POUGHKEEPSIE, NY— The Broncs lost to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Marist Saturday. “Our goal with this young and currently banged up team was to come up here and compete with pride, and I think we did that,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher.
For the Rider men junior Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) won both the one-meter (244.80) and the three-meter (244.88) dives. Korn was named the MAAC Diver of the Week last week, and was the MAAC Championships Most Outstanding Diver last year.
“Dylan didn’t have the best warm-up, and there was some concern before the meet,” said Fletcher, “but once the meet started he did very well against one of the top diving teams in the MAAC. This could be a preview of what we’ll see in the finals at the MAAC Championships.”
“I was a little disappointed on how I performed this week, compared to last week,” said Korn. “But Marist is our biggest rival, so finishing in first against them is always great. It is nice to see how you stand against the competition at this point in the season. This meet is nothing like the Championships later on in the season, but at this point of the year it is nice to know where I stand.”
Junior Matt Bauer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) won the 200 breaststroke (2:19.30) and the men’s 400 free relay team of freshman Alex Grubbs (York, Pa./York Suburban), sophomore Bryan Mejia (Long Branch), freshman Brett Daroci (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) and senior Brandon Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) finished first (3:26.52).
For the Rider women, senior Lauren Urbanski (Lansdowne, Pa./Upper Darby) won the 200 butterfly (2:07.07), freshman Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township) won the 50 free (25.28) and sophomore Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) won the 200 free (1:5.65).
Urbanski and Tomasula swam on the winning 400 medley relay (4:02.17) with senior Ryan Mitten (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) and junior Stephanie Cosentino (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy).
The Broncs compete at home next Saturday against the University of Penn and Lehigh.
