FAIRFIELD , Conn. —After losing a game to Rider almost two months ago, the Stags have been perfect.  Literally.  Riding a 30 game and 15 match winning streak, the Stags defeated the Broncs in three straight on Friday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match.

Fairfield (18-6, 15-0 MAAC) won by scores of 30-19, 30-13, 30-24.

“ Fairfield is a very good team,” said head coach Emily Ahlquist.  “They can dominate you because they have so many weapons and they have a very good setter.”

For Rider (7-17, 5-10 MAAC) senior Megan Smith (Webster, N.Y./Webster), who was the MAAC player of the week this past week had 10 kills with freshman Amy Jeary (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary’s) adding 11 digs.  Freshman JoAnna Winter ( Hamburg , Minn. /Mayer Lutheran) added 23 assists.

“We played flat, unemotional and uninspired,” said Ahlquist.  “ Fairfield is good but that doesn’t mean we can just mail in the effort.  We have to have some sense of urgency and passion when we play and we didn’t tonight.”

The Broncs have lost six in a row.  The Stags have won the last nine matches by 3-0 scores and are in first place in the conference.

“We were in the last game of the match and got within two at 23-21,” Ahlquist added.  “But they were able to pull away and seal the win.  The last five matches have all been on the road and that’s been taxing but the schedule is what it is and we have to just go out and play.  If we lose and give the effort that’s all you can ask for.  When we don’t give the effort, that’s where I have a problem.”

Rider travels to Saint Peter’s for a MAAC match Saturday afternoon.

“Since we have a 16 hour turn around before we play again, I hope the players use some of the frustration from tonight to make a change and correct some of the mistakes going into tomorrow,” Ahlquist added.
