Rider’s Smith MAAC Player of Week
LAWRENCEVILLE—Megan Smith (Webster, NY) of the Rider University volleyball team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week for all matches played October 23-29. “I’m excited about this,’ said Smith. “It is a great honor. I know there are a lot of really good players in the MAAC from playing against them, so for me to get this award is a great honor.”
“I think this is a great honor for Megan,” said Rider head coach Emily Ahlquist. “She had an incredible week.”
In MAAC matches at Marist and at Loyola, Smith compiled 54 kills. Against Marist she had a hitting percentage of .585 and a pair of service aces, and collected her 1,000th career kill. “I don’t even think she knew she was getting close to her 1,000th kill,” said Ahlquist. “She didn’t even actually know until she saw me grab the ball that she got the kill with.”
“It was never really one of my goals to win this award,” said Smith, “my goals have always been just to play hard for my team.”
Against Loyola Smith had 10 digs and four blocks.
“Megan was very consistent last weekend,” said Ahlquist. “She really raised her all-around game.
For the season Smith has 305 kills (fifth in MAAC), a hitting percentage of .285 (ninth in MAAC), and a team high 4.21 points per game.
Rider plays a MAAC match at Fairfield Friday.
