The Broncs lost to Seton Hall and host Rutgers Friday at Rutgers’ Sonny Werblin Recreation Center.

For the Rider women, senior Lauren Urbanski (Lansdowne, Pa./Upper Darby) won the 200 butterfly (2:07.2) and placed second in the 200 fly. “I swam pretty good today,” said Urbanski. “My times are faster than they were at this time last year. I like swimming against these tough teams, I  like being the underdog.”

At the 2006 MAAC Championship Urbanski placed first in both the 200 butterfly (2:05:97) and the 100 butterfly (57:12), setting a MAAC record in the 100.

Freshman Kellyanne Tomasula (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township) won the 100 backstroke (58.24) for the Broncs. Tomasula earned All-America honors in high school.

Sophomore Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.25).

For the Rider men senior Andy French (Richfield, MN) won the 1,000 freestyle (9:51.35) and placed second in both the 500 freestyle (4:47.87) and the 400 IM (4:16.76). “I did pretty well tonight,” said French. “I swam the same times as last week but I changed my strategy this week, and it worked out well. Rutgers came out swinging.  They have some fast guys, and they are a good team to swim against. They would be at the top of the MAAC, and we always try to swim against the best competition we can.

This is my last year so I’m really focusing on having fun. With the training I do the times will come, so I just want to enjoy this year.”

At the 2006 MAAC Championships French won the 1650 free (16:04:92), placed second in the 500 free (4:36:38).

Junior Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) placed second in both the one-meter dive (276.40) and the three-meter dive (277.85).

“Our men are young and we had a small roster today with several of our key people hurt (including senior Brandon Modrov of Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge, and sophomore Josh Rosenbluth of Lawrenceville/Lawrence),” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher. “That really affected our team performance.  The women had a much better showing with Seton Hall today than we did last year. The improvement is due to good senior leadership, and that was evident today.

“We have up years and down years. In the up years this is a tough meet to win, and in the down year it is a tough loss to swallow, but we schedule these teams to help us improve. These meets against Big East teams raises the bar for our athletes, and that’s what we want.”
