POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.--The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Marist Friday. “We have to learn to play well on the road,” said Rider head coach Emily Ahlquist.
After winning the first game 30-26, Rider lost the second game 22-30, the third game 22-30, and the fourth game 25-30. “We got out pretty fast, but once Marist picked up their game, we did not,” said Ahlquist. “We couldn’t find the court with our hits. We picked it up at the end, but the middle of the match our mental game was off.”
For Rider (7-15, 5-8 MAAC), senior Megan Smith (Webster, N.Y./Webster) had 27 kills, including her 1,000th career kill, giving her 1,009 for her career. “That is a great accomplishment,” said Ahlquist. “Megan played very well tonight and had a great match. She hit .700 in game two.”
“I knew I was close, but I didn’t know exactly how many I needed,” said Smith. “After the game they announced that I got my 1,000th. It was bittersweet because of the score of the match. It was never a goal I had set until I realized I was getting close. I thought if I played well for the team, I would get it, but my real incentive was to play well so the team would do well. That is my only real goal, to play well so the team does well.”
Freshman JoAnna Winter (Hamburg, MN) had 48 assists and 10 digs, and junior Katrina Stehle (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) had 15 digs. “Joanna was very consistent tonight,” said Ahlquist.
Freshman Amy Jeary (Depew, NY/St. Mary's) added 17 digs for the Broncs.
The Broncs defeated Marist 3-1 on October 7 at Rider.
Rider plays at Loyola Saturday afternoon.
