NEW ROCHELLE, NY—In wrestling it is called sudden victory. In football it is called sudden death. In baseball it is a walk-off and in soccer it is referred to as Golden Goal. Today it was more like sudden death for the Rider Broncs. “We had our chances, but we didn’t deserve to win the game if we can’t take advantage of them,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager.
The Broncs lost an overtime Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Iona Friday. It was Rider’s sixth overtime game of the season, and the first one the Broncs have lost.
Iona (5-6-4, 2-3-1 MAAC) scored in the 97th minute of the game on a penalty kick by Maciek Sliwinski. “They sent a ball through the box, the kid ran onto it and made a touch. (junior) Lee Tomasso (Westfield, NJ) won the ball and kind of slid, the kid tripped over his legs and they called it a PK,” said Fager.
Rider (3-9-4, 0-4-2 MAAC) was out-shot by Iona 17-9. Rider senior Tim Jones (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) had four of Rider’s nine shots, and two of Rider’s three shots on goal.
“In the final five minutes of the game we must have had five quality chances, three excellent chances, that we missed,” said Fager. “Jones, (sophomore Mike) Juska (of Wall, NJ) and (senior Adam) Bailey (of Southampton, PA/Archbishop Wood) each had one. Jones had a very good game up front for us. Everyone had a pretty good game. No one played poorly.”
Junior Mark Ockenhouse (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) had two shots for Rider.
Rider senior goalkeeper Dan Riverso (Williamstown) made four saves, keeping the Gaels off the board for over 96 minutes.
Nils Binstock made three saves for the Gaels.
It was Rider’s second overtime game in a row and third overtime game in the last five contests. Rider is now 1-1-4 in overtime games this season.
“The guys worked hard and for the most part did a good job, it was just an unfortunate call at the end of the game that cost us,” Fager said.
Rider travels to Fairfield for a MAAC game Sunday.
