LAWRENCEVILLE—The defending conference champion Red Foxes scored three goals in the second half for a come-from-behind Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Rider Friday. “We should have won the game,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager.
The Broncs (3-8-3, 0-3-1 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of play when junior Mark Ockenhouse (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored on a header off of a corner kick by sophomore Evan Lubcher (East Brunswick).
Rider took a 2-0 lead mid-way through the first half on a penalty kick by sophomore Mike Juska (Wall). For Juska, it was his team-high sixth goal of the season.
“In the first half we were successful because we were working the ball wide and we took guys on out there,” Fager said. “The second half I don’t think we had the ball wide but two or three times.”
Marist (5-6-1, 2-2-1 MAAC) scored in the seventh minute of the second half, and tied the score at 2-2 in the 73rd minute of play. “They out-worked us in the second half,” said Fager, “and that is what it came down to today. Work rate.”
Senior Keith Detelj, who assisted on the game-tying goal, scored the game winner with six minutes left in the contest. “The second half the bottom fell out,” said Fager. “We didn’t get the job done, and now we’re in a huge hole.”
Marist out-shot Rider 18-16, including 10-5 in the second half. “We had multiple chances in the first half,” Fager said. “In the second half all we have to do is come out and play, but we got out-worked, they got some opportunistic shots and the game was over.”
Rider senior goalkeeper Dan Riverso (Williamstown) made two saves, while Marist goalkeeper Marcelo del Rio made six saves.
Rider hosts Siena in a MAAC contest Sunday at 2:30pm (time change).
