Lauren Niewender has been a volunteer coach since 2004. “Lauren is a great asset to the team,” said Head Coach Emily Ahlquist. “Having played the game here under me she knows our system, how we practice and play. She serves as a good outlet for the players to talk to. She works hard and expects others to work just as hard.”  Niewender is a 2004 graduate of Rider University, with a degree in secondary education and English, and is currently a special education teacher at Nottingham High School. A native of Williston Park, NY, Niewender graduated from Mineola High School in 1999, where she was an All-County and All-Conference selection, and a three-time team MVP and team captain. Niewender also played for the Long Island Big Apple club team. As a sophomore at Rider, Lauren led the team in service aces and was fifth on the team in kills, and as a junior she led the team in blocking and was second in service aces and games played, and third on the squad in kills. As a senior Lauren again led the team in blocking and games played. A veteran of over 350 games, Lauren compiled over 150 blocks, 450 digs, 90 service aces, and close to 500 kills.
