NIAGARA, NY—The Broncs tied the Purple Eagles in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at Niagara Friday. “We played with a lot of emotion today,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager. “We played hard.”
Sophomore Mike Juska (Wall) scored on a penalty kick to give Rider a 1-0 lead just 15 minutes into the game. “That was a very nice shot,’ said Fager. The goal was Juska’s team-high fifth goal of the season.
Niagara tied the score at 1-1 mid-way through the first half for the rest of the scoring. “We thought we had a PK in overtime but it wasn’t called,” said Fager.
Rider senior goalkeeper Dan Riverso (Williamstown) made five saves. “I felt we really out-played them, we just couldn’t find the net,” said Riverso. “When we went from the non-conference games to the conference games we were in a bit of a slump, but I feel we’re coming out of it now. It’s going to come.”
Rider (3-6-3, 0-1-1 MAAC) out-shot Niagara (4-5-1, 2-0-1 MAAC) 19-17, including 11-4 in the second half. “We had a lot more opportunities than we had shots,” said Fager.
“In the second half I might have seen one shot,” Riverso said. “They had four or five corner kicks that could have been dangerous, but our defense handled them very well. Our defense played very well in front of me today.”
The Broncs stay in Western New York to take on Canisius in Buffalo Sunday. “I don’t think we should lose another game in the conference,” Riverso said.
