Rider Hires Maher Assistant Coach

LAWRENCEVILLE—Jim Maher of Hamilton has been named the new assistant coach of the Rider University baseball team, Rider head coach Barry Davis announced.

“As the final component to the staff, Jim gives us head coaching experience with the ability to coach all phases of the game,” said Davis, the 2006 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year who is now in his third season at Rider.  “We are excited about having him join the staff.”

A Physical Education teacher at Hamilton West High School for ten years, Maher compiled a 204-71 record as the Hamilton West head baseball coach. He coached the Bordentown American Legion baseball team in the summer and compiled a 169-80 record.

Maher recently coached the Nottingham 13-year old Babe Ruth team to the Championship Game of the World Series. At Hamilton West Maher coached former Rider pitcher and current Baltimore Oriole James Hoey.

“I’m looking forward to helping Coach Davis to the top of the MAAC,” said Maher. “I’ve seen how hard he’s worked with this program and am looking forward to being a part of it.”

His combined coach record at Hamilton West, Florence High School and American Legion is 349-140 (.714 winning percentage), winning ten league championships, including the 2000 New Jersey State Title, and was an eight-time Coach of the Year.

Maher played for the 1978 Steinert High School Group IV State Championship team, and went on to play at Mercer Community College and Atlantic Christian College. Maher earned a Master degree in Administration from the College of New Jersey in 1986, after receiving his undergraduate degree from Barton College in 1984.

Maher joins Jim Carone on the Rider baseball coaching staff.  “Jim will also assist with recruiting efforts with Coach Carone,” Davis said.

Rider finished third in the MAAC last season. The 2007 season begins February 23-25 at East Tennessee State.
