Rider Athletes of the Month
Field Hockey’s Bearish, Golf’s Brewington

LAWRENCEVILLE—One athlete carried the team on her back, and the other has recovered nicely from a broken back.

Krysta Bearish of the field hockey team, and Tyler Brewington of the golf team, were named the Rider University Athletes of the Month for the month of September.

A senior goalkeeper, Bearish (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) won six straight games in September, including two shutouts, and made 38 saves in nine games, allowing just 11 goals to lead Rider to a 7-2 record.  “I’m really excited about this award,” said Bearish, “that the field hockey team got recognized. This award means the team played well in September.”

“Krysta is a team player in everything she does,” said Rider head coach Lori Hussong.  “The fast that she credits her teammates for her success is a tribute to her. She has turned herself into a very good goalkeeper and someone we are proud to be around.”

Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) was the medalist at both the Cornell Invitational and the Bucknell Invitational, leading Rider to a first place finish in both 15-team events.  Brewington also placed runner-up at the St. Bonaventure tournament when he broke the Rider record for a 36-hole score when he shot a 137.

“This is a great honor,” said Brewington, “but I’m sure there were a lot of Rider athletes who were just as deserving.  I’m honored to get this award over so many other great athletes we have here. I did have a pretty good month, but more importantly, the golf team had a pretty good month, winning two tournaments and finishing third in another.”

A two-time All-MAAC golfer, Brewington missed the first competition of the fall season due to a fractured vertebra suffered in a car accident at the end of summer vacation. “I was in a neck brace for about two weeks,” said Brewington. “The first week of September it came off, and the next week the doctor cleared me. It was painful at first to swing the clubs, but the pain went away at  Bucknell.”

“Tyler’s return meant a lot,” said first-year head coach Bob Whartenby, a former three-time All-MAAC golfer at Rider. “Getting a solid player back into the line up, the rest of the team feels more relaxed.  You know he’s going to come in with a good score. I felt once Tyler got back it would make the other players play better. It just brings the best out of everybody.”

“There are a lot of things that go into one person being successful,” said Brewington. “Bob has done such a great job with the team and the entire team is playing well.”

The golf team is now off until the spring season. “I wish the fall season wasn’t ending, we’re playing so well,” said Brewington.  “This was a great way to end it.”

As of October 1 Bearish ranked 19th in the nation in goals against average and was 20th in Division I in save percentage.  Bearish holds the Rider record for career victories with 53. “Krysta has grown with the program,” said assistant coach Dan Hussong.  “As a rookie, the team may have carried her a bit, but since then she has been a leader on the team and has lent stability and helped us maintain a championship caliber program.  She has gotten better every year and she is a top flight goalie nationally.  Krysta is very deserving of all of the records that she is setting and the awards she is receiving.”

Carrying the team on your back, or recovering from a broken back to lead your team to victory.  Either way it is deserving of the Rider Athlete of the Month award.
