Rider Wins Cornell Invitational
ITHACA, NY—Two out of three ain’t bad. For the second time in three years, the Rider Broncs held on to win the 54-hole Cornell Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday on the par 72 Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University. “To win this tournament twice in a three-year span is quite an accomplishment,” said Rider head coach Bob Whartenby.
The Broncs shot a 300 Sunday for a total of 886 (295/291/300), holding off runner-up St. Bonaventure, who finished with an 888 after a 294 on Sunday. “We were leaking some oil coming in to the finish, but we came through,” said Whartenby. Rider led the 15-team field by one stroke after the first round and eight strokes after 36 holes.
“This was a very good field, with good teams, so this was a nice tournament to win,” said Whartenby.
Rider junior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) was the medallist with a 54-hole total of 215 with a 70 on Sunday. Brewington shot a 76 in the first round and came back to score a 69 in the second round, the best score of the second round and tied for the best score of the day on Saturday.
“I hit the ball well today,” said Brewington. “My distance control was the key today,” said Brewington. “I was around the pin all day.”
Junior Josh Krumholz (Reading, Pa./Gov. Mifflin) placed fifth among the 78 golfers with a 73 on Sunday to finish with a 220. Krumholz shot a 73 and a 74 on Saturday. “Josh was the medallist here two years ago, and played well again this weekend,” said Whartenby.
Sophomore Eric LeFante (Colts Neck, N.J.) placed 12th overall with a 225 after shooting a 76 Sunday. On Saturday he shot a 72 and a 77.
Junior Dylan Maxey (Montrose, Pa./Montrose Area) finished 19th with a total of 227, after an 81 Sunday. Maxey had a 74 and a 72 on Saturday.
Junior Pat Rutter (Wyomissing, Pa./High Point) finished 58th with a 243, after an 86 on Sunday. Rutter had an 81 in the first round but came back to shoot a 76.
Rider won this tournament in 2004, and placed sixth of 15 teams last year.
The Broncs are now finished for the fall season. The spring season begins in March. “This is a great way to end the fall season,” said Whartenby.
“I wish the fall season wasn’t ending, we’re playing so well,” said Brewington. “This was a great way to end it.”
