Rider in Lead at Cornell Invitational-Day One
ITHACA, NY—The Broncs are in first place after the first 36 holes of the 54-hole Cornell Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday on the par 72 Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University. “We played great,” said Rider coach Bob Whartenby. “We were first after round one by just one shot, but then we came back and did even better, under tougher conditions.”
The Broncs shot a 295 in the first round, which led the 15-team field by one stroke, and came back to fire a 291 in round two for a total of 586 to lead by eight shots over St. Bonaventure. “It was cold up here and kept getting colder by the hour.” Whartenby said. “But we really grinded it out, and as the conditions got tougher we seemed to play better. It was really good stuff.”
Rider junior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) is currently in fourth place after shooting a 76 in the first round and coming back to score a 69 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 145. Brewington’s 69 was the best score of the second round and tied for the best score of the day.
Junior Dylan Maxey (Montrose, Pa./Montrose Area) had a 74 and a 72 for a total of 146 and is in eighth place.
Junior Josh Krumholz (Reading, Pa./Gov. Mifflin) shot a 73 and a 74 for a total of 147, and sophomore Eric LeFante (Colts Neck, N.J.) shot a 72 and a 77 for a total of 149, good for ninth place.
Junior Pat Rutter (Wyomissing, Pa./High Point) had an 81 but came back to shot a 76 for a 36-hole total of 157 and is in 46th place. “A couple of guys started off poorly, and they came back and recovered nicely,” said Whartenby.
Rider placed sixth of 15 teams at Cornell last fall after winning the title in 2004.
With declining conditions expected for tomorrow, more Good Stuff should be in order.
Play continues Sunday.
