LAWRENCEVILLE--The Broncs fell to the defending Patriot League champion Leopards Tuesday for their third straight loss. “We were disappointed today,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager.
Senior Dylan Matlack (Geigertown, Pa./Twin Valley) sent a long centering pass to senior Adam Bailey (Southampton, PA/Archbishop Wood), who beat Lafayette goal keeper Ben Jacobs to the ball and fired into an open net for his first goal of the season, giving the Broncs a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of play.
“Dylan got the ball off of his chest, he hit a through ball that split two defenders,” said Bailey. “It was a 50-50 ball between me and the goalie, I was able to get to it first and hit it around him.”
“When Adam gets the ball he is very good with it,” said Fager. “He’s dangerous with it, but when he doesn’t get the ball it is almost like he disappears. We can’t figure out why we can’t get him the ball.”
The second half was all Lafayette (5-2-1), as the Leopards out-shot Rider 8-1 in the second period and 16-4 for the game.
Lafayette scored twice in a 13 minute span, both times on rebounds after the initial shots were blocked.
Lafayette had 16 corner kicks to Rider’s one.
Rider senior goalkeeper Dan Riverso (Williamstown) made six saves. Ben Jacobs made two saves for Lafayette.
Rider (3-5-2) hosts Loyola in the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the season Saturday, October 30, on Rider Soccer Alumni Day. The day will feature a men’s and women’s doubleheader and a Bronc-A-Q cookout.
“Now with the MAAC games it is like starting all over again,” said Fager. “A win Saturday and we’re in first place in the conference, and that would be a big plus for us.”
“Obviously, the conference games mean everything,” said Bailey. “The conference is what we play for. Everything before that is just to prepare us for the conference games. If we can come out with a win on Saturday, that would change our whole season. A new season starts Saturday.”
