Rider Finishes Third at St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, NY—Junior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, PA/Benton) shot a 66 on Monday to set a new Rider 36-hole record with a score of 137, leading Rider to a third place finish at the 15-team Leo Keenan Invitational, hosted by St. Bonaventure. “I’m extremely happy with the way we played this weekend, but Tyler broke my record, and I’m not real happy about that,” said Rider head coach Bob Whartenby.

Brewington, who had the third best score of the day on Sunday with a 71, had the best round among the 80 golfers on Monday, compiling six birdies on the par 70 Bartlett C. C. course. His 137 total placed second overall to medallist Bryan Bigley of Siena, who shot a 134.

“Tyler played unbelievable,” said Whartenby. “He made one bad shot all day, on the 15th, and besides that he didn’t miss a shot.”

“Today I played with the leader (Bigley) who shot a 64 yesterday,” Brewington said. “I felt I could give him a run for his money if I got off to a good start, and I birdied the first two holes.  I had a 65 at White Deer in Allenwood (PA, near Williamsport) as a senior in high school, finishing seven-under. That was the best score I ever had in a tournament.”

The old Rider record for a 36-hole tournament was set in 2002 when then-sophomore Bob Whartenby shot a 139 at the Princeton Invitational, held at Springdale. “He (Whartenby) actually told me about the record after the tournament was over,” said Brewington. “I didn’t know it was a record or who held it. To break a record held by one of Rider’s greatest golfers ever is an honor.”

Junior Dylan Maxey (Montrose, PA) shot a 77 on Sunday but came back to shoot a 72 on Monday for a total of 149 to place 24th overall, tied with sophomore Eric LaFante (Colts Neck). LaFante had a 75 on Monday after a 74 on Sunday.

Juniors Josh Krumholz (Reading, PA/Gov. Mifflin) and Patrick Rutter (Wyomissing, PA) finished tied for 31st overall with a two-day total of 150.  Both shot a 76 on Monday after 74s on Sunday.

“I’m very proud of the guys,” said Whartenby.  “This tournament had great competition that played well. We played like we were going to win, but I’m happy about placing third in such a talented field.”

Host St. Bonaventure won the tournament, followed by Siena and Rider.

The Broncs play at the Cornell Invitational this weekend.
