Rider Third at St. Bonny-Day One

OLEAN, NY— Patience is a virtue, especially when you are trying to golf in the wind. “It was really windy today, maybe 30, 35 miles per hour,” said Rider head coach Bob Whartenby. “You have to be patient in these conditions. The wind will mess with your swing, and mess with your mind.”

The Broncs kept their patience, and kept their swings and their minds under control Sunday, as Rider shot a 293 on the first day and is currently in third place at the 15-team Leo Keenan Invitational, hosted by St. Bonaventure.

Rider junior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, PA/Benton) shot a 71 on the par 70, 6,340-yard Bartlett C.C. course to lead the Broncs, and is currently tied for third overall. “Tyler did very well,” said Whartenby.

“It was really windy, and the wind messes with your game,” said Brewington. “Sometimes the wind was so strong right to left, you had to aim off of the green so the wind would blow it back, which for me is really hard too do.”

Sophomore Eric LaFante (Colts Neck), junior Josh Krumholz (Reading, PA/Gov. Miffln), and junior Patrick Rutter (Wyomissing, PA) all shot a 74 to tie for 18th place among the 80 golfers.

Junior Dylan Maxey (Montrose, PA) shot a 77.

"All of the guys did well,” said Whartenby. “Dylan had some bad breaks on the last three holes, but until then he was right there with the rest of the team.”

Play continues Monday. Last year Rider was 14th after day one (309) and came back to finish seventh (597) at St. Bonaventure. Rider won the 2004 Leo Keenan Invitational with a score of 599.

"Overall we did okay,” said Brewington. “It's a two-day tournament, and we're confident we can come back and win this thing tomorrow.  I think we'll rise to the occasion. We’re only four strokes off.”

Hopefully the wind will die down Monday. “It was blowing pretty good today,” Whartenby said.
