BUFFALO, N.Y.—After playing an emotionally charged match on Saturday, the Broncs faced the Golden Griffs of Canisius on Sunday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match. Well, Golden for Canisius. For Rider not so much.
Rider (4-9, 2-2 MAAC) was swept in three games with the Golden Griffs winning 30-20, 30-19, 30-22.
“Normally when you go on the road and play back to back matches in the MAAC, especially the Buffalo trip, you want at least a split for the weekend,” said head coach Emily Ahlquist. “So the positive is that we gained a split after winning yesterday. But, we had a chance to sweep the weekend and that’s an opportunity that you don’t get very often in the conference so we are extremely disappointed that we didn’t play better and rise to the challenge and seize that opportunity.”
For the Broncs, senior Megan Smith (Webster, N.Y./Webster) had 10 kills and freshman Amy Jeary (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary’s) had 10 digs.
Freshman JoAnna Winter (Hamburg, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) added 27 assists for Rider.
Canisius out blocked the Broncs 16-1 with Rider coming in with an attack percentage of two percent with the Golden Griffs successful on 30 percent of their attacks.
“There are two schools of thought on a match like today,” said Ahlquist. “You can throw the tape out the bus window and move on or you can learn from the mistakes that you made. With the youth that we have, we need to impress upon them how important it is to learn from the mistakes. Canisius is a very good team. With that said, we didn’t challenge them, didn’t push them and almost everything that they got, we gave them. We made a ton of errors and mental mistakes.”
Rider travels to Iona on Friday to face the Gaels in a MAAC match at 7:00pm.
